Dad rang up & wanted to do a short evening hunt, he was away last weekend & is away the next one. He had spotted a thin strip where the oil seed rape had not grown. We did the whole of this edge with nothing & decided to make our way to a nearby grass field to check the length of the grass. It was a field we had done but a very poor one, however it had not been XPed  We had to cross a Bean Field (or the edge of one) to get to it. On the way I noticed a few areas the Beans had not grown so I gave it a bit of a go, spotted a piece of Roman Pot! That was all the encouragement I needed, looked at the lay of the land & homed in on a scrappy roman coin then more pottery. Then found a nice hammered on the tyre track sitting on the surface ;D (never did get to check out the grass field)

Ended up in 2 hours getting 3 Roman Bronze Coins, 1 very poor Roman Silver, Roman partifact.
18th Century Clog Clasp

James I Penny 1623-24 - better than the example in Spinks book :icon_thumright:

Plus another Roman Site which we had no idea of until today :sign13: (too much land, too little time)

Nice James I Penny it shows well. :icon_thumright:
It'll still be a few months before those beans come off, and your on that field?

We will make a record of it, but this year is so busy with excellent sites on the list already, its likely to be left until last. But it all depends on the harvesting options at the time.

I can always count on clicking on your post and seeing something I've never seen before :laughing7: :icon_thumleft: Hot digs

Thats generally how I measure success, if I haven't found it yet its a good find. Even if just a button :icon_thumright:
Or if its better condition than others in my collection, which this Penny is by a long way.

Yes I read where yours is better than the book example... I meant to ask you, you said that William III shilling is in good shape compared to what you've seen.. I can't seem to find the mintage ??? It says unknown.. any estimates?

Good shape compared to how they are found (clearly some nice ones in collections undug). Nearly always dug very worn. Note, several of this year had different mints like Chester etc.. yours has no letter under the head, so I think its London.
Mintage would have been fairly high (low millions most likely), however, with the silver shortage in the later years many would have been returned to mint and melted down for re-issue. My books don't have the mintage figures & I'm sure you could get a better opinion than this, but not sure where to go.

Nope, this will suffice.. I guess the exacts don't really matter but somewhere in the ballpark.. this is kind of what I figured as far as low millions.. Thank you

That's a lovely hammered mate :icon_thumleft:

Lucky something :laughing7:

Great finds, pretty nice to have a dad for a hunting partner. I always enjoy your posts. I would love to be
able to come over your way and dig.

I know the feeling when you find a site you didn't know was there. A couple of weeks ago, I was arrowhead hunting here in Ohio and came upon a log cabin site, that I didn't know about, I did find a nice bottle sticking out of the ground. Sure enough, I got out my 1860 Atlas and saw a home site in that area. Hope to be able to get permission to hunt that site next fall as it has been planted.
