The Doans were Real. The Treasure Could be real.
But this Tale may take a Bit of Gullibility to Believe 100%
I can think of several reasons for the Tale.
1. Simply as a Story to sound Worldly or ghost story for around a Campfire.
2. To protect the treasure spot from the Gullible of the time period.
3. A scam. I'll sell you Protection so You can go get it.
Come to mind.
