Lovin' This Spring Weather! Scovill token?

Sunny and in the 70's here! What a difference a week makes. Got out a couple of times last week with Lisa and Terri. Not a lot of keepers, but enough to keep my interest. :)

Yesterday Charlie and I went to visit some old friends in Talladega. A couple of weeks ago, they (Mike and Sonya) had mentioned an old place where his Grandmom's house once stood, and invited me up to hunt.

Brought along the extra detector, gave a quick lesson in hunting and got busy digging. Didn't have but a couple of hours to hunt, but it was a lot of fun. While hunting, I'd look over to make sure Sonya didn't need any help....she didn't. :D She was pulling those relics out like nobodies business. :icon_pirat:
Ended up with a '25 wheat, a cuff button, an old watch and what I thought at the time was a coin. Sat here half the night last night trying to figure out what I had found. It's about the size of a dime and has writing on one side but blank on the other. :icon_scratch: Almost worn smooth on the writing side as well. :-X Put it in the ultra sonic cleaner and could make out a few letters, then did the peroxide cleaning and could see a few more. After searching and pondering over what it may be, I think I've convinced myself that it's some kind of token from Scovill? I think I can read 'Best Double'? around the bottom and then 'Sco' around the top..so I thought maybe it says 'Scovill'? I didn't know they made tokens, but after a bit of research, seems they did. It has a circle with something inside the circle and looks like I can see just a tiny bit of gilt. Anyone know what it is? How old is it? What is it suppose to look like? :P

This is the best I could do with the pictures...sorry...

Exactly right. It looks like it says "Scovills Best Double Gilt"--and the shank is broken off, which is why it looked like a coin.

Those flat buttons are tricky. 8)

Nice finds Nana. That flat button is great. Means there are more oldies there. You're right, a week can make a big difference. Down side is the bugs that thrive in this kind of weather. I got 4 girls sick with virus.

Wow! Really? Guess this is my first old flat button then! :D I had no idea...no sign what so ever of a shank ever being there, that I can see. :icon_scratch: Thanks for the ID, Dale and BB! :)

Hi Alabama Nana. I know these finds do not measure up to your standards but they are still nice finds that most fols would love to have. Let the buttercups lead you to old unhunted homesites in the woods. HH.

Nana,
Lots of cool finds there young lady! I love finding those toy soldiers. Looks like a nice one there.
Does that general service eagle cuff button have a back mark on it?
I dug one just like it today. It is a 20mm with a "Scovill Mfg. Co. - Waterbury" back mark. The button books I have show it as circa 1875-1902.

Congrats on the goodies.

If it were the CW/Indian Wars Era eagle, this would be true. But it is the great seal button in design, so that means it is post-1902.
