Any love token experts out there? This is not dug; I found it among my dad's things. He wasn't a collector, but I'll never know where he got it. I've searched a bit, to find out it's apparently a love token. They're made from real coins? Are there counterfeit love tokens? What I've read indicates that the sweetheart's initials are put on the reverse. This one looks like a dollar sign, which in itself makes it suspect, but I suppose it could be I.I. over S.

Forgot to include a size comparison, sorry... It's 1/2" in diameter.

in my opinion looks like a US $1.00 1849-1854
but I'm no real expert on Gold coin types

I'd say real as long as that Blue Mark is paint or chalk & not where the gold is rubbing off.

Also if it does not stick to a Magnet.

the scratches on the face look like what happens easily to soft gold too

Nice Find :icon_thumleft:

Doesn't stick to a magnet. Can't tell about the discoloration. Kinda does look more like something rubbing off than something stuck on it, but I'd think wear would be seen more on the edges. A love token with a dollar sign on it seemed hokey to me, but SH is a possibility. I've never seen a $1 gold coin; didn't realize they were so small.

I can't tell from the photo if it is a real US $1.00 1849-1854 coin or not, but the initials are S-H.

gold coins were minted to the Weight/value.

If minted today, a $5.00 gold coin may be the size of your pinky finger nail,
and much thinner.

The discoloration does worry me.
other then to dull it's surface, you can't tarnish gold

if you don't have a local coin dealer, or Jeweler that you can trust to
tell you the truth, I'd suggest work at that blue, & see if you can remove it or if it
is under the gold.

or possibly take it to any jeweler Don't tell him/her you don't know if it is real.
Ask the Jeweler How to remove the Stain. He will then be honest
and try to sell you a Jewelry cleaner,
Offer to professionally clean it,
or tell you it's the inside & won't come off.

Jewelers don't all buy Gold, So one that doesn't has no reason
to B.s. on it's content, then offer to take it off your hands.
& it's unique so a bait & switch is also out.

& I'd say H.S. or S.H.

if "I I" the Horizontal Lines would not be inside
& the tops & bottoms would not be one sided

Looks good to me. I've never seen a flood of this kind of fake, can you show us some?
S.H or H.S as others state.

I've never heard of a Fake Love token in particular either.
But I have seen many pieces of Jewelry posted over the years that had
old coin designs on the.
So I can't rule it out.
Although I do believe the front looks genuine

Unless my logic is flawed, love token collectors do not pay more than gold coin collectors. So to do this or even fake it is hardly worth the effort. Also because every token is individual it doesn't lend itself to being reproduced over & over. They would be spotted far quicker than a fake coin. Too much effort with no reward.

I do believe you are correct. Although there probably are collectors,
I don't think there is a Big Scramble to own them all

Interesting video, I learned a lot. I think I see some accumulation of blue in a couple of the grooves. I'll look for a reputable coin dealer or jeweler. Thanks to all!
