Searched a suburban house lot yesterday. Neighborhood is built on a sight that served the Continental army in the Rev. war and the Confederates during the WBTS. Found almost three dollars in modern coins; 63 coins in all and then, mixed in with all the modern stuff, four very old round balls. Three were probably patched balls used in a .69 cal. smooth bore. The fourth was either a small caliber pistol ball or used as part of a buck and ball round as it appears to be <.40 cal.. Was a strange day detecting as it seemed unusual to me to find all of this modern stuff and then the balls that are almost certainly more than 150 yrs old. Nothing in between. BTW, anybody know of a reliable way to date the musket balls?
