OK , pretty slow tonight, with nothing to reply to I'll have to ask something instead. !! SO... having never found a silver dollar or fifty cent pc. and thinking back to when we were kids, these coins went straight to Mom's save drawer and not into pockets for spending. My wife also has a little box of them she saved growing up so I think that was fairly common practice ?? In the present time almost all indicator detectors have a target hit for them but just how many are actually being found ???

i have personally only found susan b anthony and sacagawea dollars and was surprised to find them! i didnt know many people (including myself) that used dollar coins let alone lost them.

As hard as it is to believe, I have found three Morgan silver dollars. I would think a coin as big as that would surely be spotted before it could possibly sink into the ground. So there are some out there.

In times past I did what I would say was a good bit of coin shooting. And in all that time I have only found one silver dollar, a 1921 next to a sidewalk about 2 inches deep. Yes I'd say most are seen before they have a chance to be lost long.

People don't always think of this kind of thing, but it helps if you do. You have to consider all the possiblities here. Of course someone would probually find a dollar coin if they knew the general location of where they lost it. But what if it was winter and there was a foot of snow on the ground. It becomes a lot harder to find, almost impossible. Then by the time the ground thawed and the coin sinks JUST below the grass roots the owner of the coin had long forgotten about it.

I found an1885 morgan in the surf two years ago. ?There had been some construction in the beach town and the dollar must have been dumped on the beach with a load of sand because it was in excellent shape.

I have only found one half dollar and no silver dollars. The half dollar was found at a park I had been over a dozen times . It's where I go to practice and experiment with my new GTI 2500. It kept ringing up the exact same as a buried aluminum can and the area was full of smashed flat aluminum cans. One day I was experimenting with my machine and learining how to discriminate out those cans and it worked except for this one site that kept ringing up as a "D" size target at about 5". Finally my curiosity got the better of me and I dug it up to find the half dollar. Since then I have planted it in my coin garden and have learned to tell the difference in it and an aluminum can. They ring up similar but not exactly the same.. I can't even explain the difference but I can tell it when I run over the half dollar vs the can. JIM

Remember too that a silver dollar was a whole days wage and if they thought they knew where it fell, they'd try to locate it. But if there was a hole in the pocket, they might not miss it till too late. They might have even slipped it into a vest pocket and when bending over it fell out without them seeing or hearing it. About 50 years ago, i lost 4 Morgan silver dollars. When i was a kid, every time I got a dollar, I'd go to the bank and exchange it for a silver dollar.I wasn't really interested in coin collecting, it was just a good feeling to have heavy coins instead of paper.
One summer, for my birthday, I received $4. I took the $4 to the bank and exchanged them for 4 silver dollars. I held them in my hand all the way back home only to trip on the curb out side of my house. All 4 coins rolled down into the sewer.:( I have no idea what the dates on the coins were, but I'm reasonably sure that the coins are still there. If anybody is brave enough to go sewer diving, I'd be happy to tell you the MASSACHUSETTES location. ;D
Now don't even ask me what happened to the 3 Braided Hair large cents i found while digging in my grandmother's garden All i Will say about it is, the ice cream was good.

I found a bicentenial (sp) 1/2 dollor a couple of weeks ago iin the wood chips in the play area at the park.

Hi all, I too am looking for the elusive Silver Dollar, But have been blessed this year with 2 silver halves right from my own yard!!!! A 1942 WL and 1903 Barber. I love this hobby ;D

In 6 years i have only found 5 half dollars (2 1942 walkers, 2 frankilins & 1 kennedy) & maybe 5 dollar coins (4 saccagaweas & 1 susan B). The walkers, franklins & susan B were found at the same large virgin detecting site, but were all found way far apart from each other.? The kennedy was found in a park's woodchip area.
? Never found a BIG dollar coin. :'(

Here are the halfs minus one of the walkers (cant seem to find that pic anywhere on my comp).

Believe it or not as big as they are they do get lost. I have about 6 yrs detecting experience and have found a good bit of half's and dollars. In the last 3 and a half years I have found 2 barber half's. 3 franklin half's. 4 Kennedy half's. 1 Ike, 1 sac, and one Susan. Back ten years ago when I started hunting for the other 2 and a half years experience I have I found a Morgan and a peace dollar at the same location. Grass was high in those times. And if something got lost in that twirled up type of grass it was gone. Also some spots that are old were stopping places. I can still dig a coin at a old home and see a rider lying on a lawn stopping through for a drink or something and loosing a dollar. It's gone forever.

I have found alot of tokens over 50 in my 6 years and alot have been dollar and half dollar in size. Untouched area's will give up these kinds of big hits. There hard to find nowadays in the open area's. I did also find one walker right off of a porch. It must have rolled off the edge and no one could find it.

Keep searching there out there.
