Just wanted to know if this civil war cartridge pouch is authentic or just an old re-enactment piece. I don’t know much about this type of stuff, but I think the leather looks like it’s too nice of condition to be authentic. Hoping that someone who is knowledgeable could help me out a bit. Picked it up a while back at a thrift shop for pretty cheap. 0D5E0F56-5A59-4126-87DE-C247E028D3F9.jpegFE91BD52-5868-442B-8544-8BF1AA932876.jpeg9FEA415C-9362-4E0B-9F08-88BBF48BE9F3.jpeg45F029E5-89DE-4B0E-AE91-F8D47B323FB3.jpeg9DBEF688-B45B-4082-9549-FB68BF68972A.jpeg

I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard weird! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) so if you ask a question, etc. - people may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...

Welcome to Tnet from Mississippi. I say a messenger pouch and could be real by dating the leather. Congrats

Welcome to Tnet. What you have is a Federal Infantry soldiers Cartridge Box and plate (US). These boxes carried the soldiers issue of Minnie' Balls which were wrapped in paper cartridges and contained the black powder needed to fire the bullets. These were worn over the soldiers shoulder. The box plate was attached to the outer flap in order to add weight to the flap and prevent spilling or losing any cartridges. By the looks of the leather, I would say that this is a reproduction piece most likely used by a re enactor. These pieces are pretty authentically made and look very much like what was used and worn during the CW. I was a re enactor myself for about 15 years, but I was in the Confetrit' Army. Still, this is a nice piece and will display well.

Look's 'repo' IMO.
