Hey everyone,

I'm new to the detecting scene (2 months total). I see all these really cool coins everyone is posting. I don't have any knowledge on the time periods, the materials, the different coins and the years they changed from one style to the next, etc. Does anyone know of some really good web sites that show a chronological list of all these coins? You know, the liberty coins, barber dimes, large cents, when they were silver, when the stopped making silver in each coin, when pennies were changed from copper to zinc or the other way around. I just want to have a better idea of these things.

Or how about any really good books on the subject,...there are probably 100,000 books on it, I'd like to find a good one with really good pics. Whats out there?

Thanks everyone in advance,

Rod

Rod,

buy a "Red Book" price guide,

it shows all that you speak of here with prices in the various conditions.

You can get one on ebay for probably $10 - it's a good source for learning all about coins!

Cool Lonewolfe,

Thanks, I'll do that right now!

How ya been buddy, Ok? :)

Here's a pcgs site. Lots of coin info there. Also check out the U.S. Treasury and mint sites. And go ahead and odwnload "The Big Coinhuna" an offical US government metal detecting screen saver. You'll laugh, yuo'll cry, you'll wonder how much Uncle Sam spent on this gem!

Yep! The Red Book Of Coin Values gives dates & total coins minted for just about each & every coin of US production. It has nice color pix too. Costs about $12.95 at any book store. It gives values acording to grade percentages, but it is a retail ?( sellers ) price guide. The Blue Book Of Coin Values is more of a buyers guide & is a little more realistic in values. If you're buying, use the Blue Book, if you're selling, use the Red Book. Spotz

thanks guys.

I have all the info I think I need now to start the project of purchasing the books.

I'll let you guys know what I end up with.

Thanks again,
Rod
