Greetings,

I am interested in purchasing my first metal detector and I am in need of some opinions. I think I have it narrowed down to the Garrett Ace 250 and the Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300. I can get either one for about $200, and I was wondering which one I would be better off with (or if there is an even better option in that price range).
Thanks for the help!

If it were me I would not get either one. Save your money decide if you really want to do this hobby. Get yourself a decent detector if you have decided this hobby is for you.

Both machines will limit your hunts.

WARNING.....this hobby is addicting. I have had no real experience with the detectors you listed but just wondered it you had looked into the Fisher F2 or for just a little more the Tesoro Silver uMax. I do know the little Tesoro is an awsome machine. Capable of hanging in there with detectors costing twice as much and has a lifetime warranty. I have no reason to think the ones you listed are not great machines but have been looking into a back-up and one to let my daughter use if she wants to go and have been leaning toward the above mentioned detectors. Just thought I would muddy the water a little for ya. :laughing7:

The F2 and Ace 250 are both considered entry level machines, but are by no means gimped. Both do extremely well, even for entry level machines.

I’m new at this MD stuff and my only MD is the Ace 250.

I lucked into get the Ace 250 (only one I could find on a store shelf around here) and really like it.

It is easy to use, light in weight, and easy to read.

The tones (beeps) it makes are to my liking, some people do not like the different tones it makes for different metals.

The display with it’s dots that show what kind of metal it’s reading, I like. I am not good with numbers (even while having a job that uses lots of numbers, it’s hard keeping them straight).

The only thing I wish that was different on the Ace, even although I haven’t been to the beach yet, is that it would work better near salt water (wet sand and surf).

From what I hear, Garrett’s personal service is second to none. I haven’t had to use it yet. If I upgrade to a better MD, it will probably be another Garrett.

This is only my 3 cents, I mean 2 cents, worth.

I have the Ace 350 and to make it work well at a salt water beach I had to reduce the sensitivity until it stopped chattering and had to discremenate the dot to the left of the nickel and I was good to go.
