Looking for a job in America

I'm very impressed

with how thoughtful and respectful this thread has been. You know, Spooky, you impress me with your ability to speak your mind, and let others speak theirs. I probably don't agree with many of your opinions...but I trust that your opinions are sincere.

One thing I believe, when people disagree, if they keep talking and listening, they usually find out that the disagreements are small...like chosing two roads to the same location.

Unions, I just finished reading Woody guthrie's biography, the need to protect the laborers was necessary at one time. But of course corruption set in, and now it's a mess. Change happens, can't stop it. Why do we think what was good years ago will be good forever? Adaptations in life and community must constantly take place. We have to learn, hang on to the good things, and discard the bad, maybe totally discard something when it's no longer viable. (not talking people here) People are always what we need to concentrate on. That's why I like Bamabill's ideas so much. It combines jobs and conservation. It's frustrating to me that jobs in the "green" industry aren't being developed faster. Greed at all levels and disorganization at grassroots level gets in the way.

Recycling. I live in a rural area. No recycling within an hour of where I live. That's ridiculous. every community needs one. The minds who work in organizing people and money need to get with the people who have the heart and backbone to get the job done. (I'm the heart and backbone type, I can't even organize my own household)

My 26 year old son is unemployed now for 3 months. He is getting to where he would work for peanuts, (I hope) and I think there are starting to be a lot of Americans willing to do things they never would have considerd before. NOW is when the movers and shakers need to be moving in that direction. We've got a very hungry labor force. I'd also like to mention that mine and my husband's jobs are very very much in jeopardy right now. He's worked for the same company over 25 years, and me for 13 years. This subject is very much on my mind. CONGRESS SUX!! I'm so disappointed in them, but I'm not without hope that things can turn around. Peacefully! We've seen in other countries what can happen if it doesn't turn around, but it will take working with people you don't like, and finding common ground.

Some seem ready to embrace the alternative and the future be damned. They seem to have the loudest voice via the internet and media.

Ok, let calmer minds take note, consider each side, FIND A COMPROMISE, and move ahead. And not with a violent revolution as some are so ready for. The end results may not go your way.

I think we need to face the future fearlessly. Fear just rips everything apart. We are the home of the brave, and that doesn't just mean military combat. We need to be fearless on the Homefront now.

But we are part of the world economy also. Just because that complicates matters, is still no reason to just lock the doors. Again, Change can be fearful, and we must on an individual level meet that change head on with hope that we can turn things around. If enough individuals can keep their heart full of hope, they can come together as a force and find a way.

I know how emotional all this will sound to some types, But that's who I AM. If you are not exactly like me, then let's combine your rational thinking with my passion and get America working again.

This is my longest post ever! I'll get off my soapbox now, I see my hunting buddy is online and we need to make plans for a GREAT HUNT today, because this will be the best day, literally, no exaggerations, we've had in Northern Okieland since Thanksgiving.

And while we are out there enjoying this great big beautiful country, I promise you this will still be on my mind.

Y'all have a wonderful day! And remember that the treasures you find may not always be something material.

WOW Naturegirl, loved your post very insightful and on the money, kudos.

Trust me, I am not in a great situation either, nor is a good part of America to be honest. I will be going on 16 months of being unemployed, worst part is that I am not entitled to unemployment because I left a job that was not paying what was do me. According to the state that is tough luck, so long as you had a salary that was good enough. I'll be dammed if I am going to make a company rich and not be compensated correctly. I may look dumb, but I am not stupid. ;D

So I decided to open my own company and just sell me!! I have over 30 years in the transportation industry and have worked almost every position covering all modes of transportation. I still don't make enough to live on, and part-time work is not available in my area, so I will just hang in there and wait for the tide to change. The good part is that I actually do have a following in business, and one by one I am re-cooping my accounts. In a sense I am lucky to have a skill in sales, but then again as you can see from my posts, I am not your typical salesperson. My style is a mixture of information and entertainment and many out there are too straight laced to pull this off. Here's an example, about 4 years ago when Steve Irwin died, I dressed up for Halloween that year as Steve and made a stingray and stuck it in my chest and had a tail coming out of my back. Tasteless, yes, but also a warped sense of funny. I can tell you people still talk about it today, and that is what helps separate the wheat form the chaff.

Yes, some companies take advantage of their employees, and yet there are others that treat their employees like gold. It all boils down to the shareholders that gain the true profit and you need to keep the little greedy people happy. In a sense we are playing with their investments, but by the same token they are making a huge profit in many cases. Don't get me wrong, their are even small business that appreciate their employees efforts and look to reward them. I have seen a huge company in Boston, burn to the ground, yet the owner paid his employees in full until a new plant could be made. That company was in business from the mid 1800's and is still viable today!

What people have to understand is that like it, or not, we're all in the same boat. We just need a captain with good sea legs and a few good oarsmen.

This has been a great thread. I like talking about the future of AMERICA. Things are bad now, but they have been bad before. I do not think we should look for some great leader to save us. We the people have to save ourselves. Good luck everyone.

You, as well as just about everyone as far as I can see are on the money. What always separated the USA from other countries was "the good old American Know-how", that is what we seem to be missing today. In the past when our nation faced similar situations, we had come up with a way to overcome the problem. As Spooky mentions, many are just waiting for a handout, and that is not far from the truth. I am not so sure if America will once again be one of the greatest manufacturers in the world, especially in my lifetime. It would take perhaps decades to undo the damage already done.

We have several options on this front. First is to come up with something new that the whole world wants, and we just make til the cows come home. Another option is "thinking green", finding ways to improve or energy systems, with water, wind, solar and anything else to drive the the cost of power. The only problem there is perhaps a low profit yield on a company's return. We really just need a way to stabilize our economy, and stop out sourcing jobs. Like what was mentioned by several earlier, reduce salaries, and consumer goods until everything falls into line. No easy task. The only thing that makes matter worse is that our currency is based on nothing; not gold, or silver, just having a good faith.

Hopefully all this stuff was rung up by a sales clerk who lives here in america, and the stores where owned by americans, and they used american money made here in AMERICA. :hello2: :laughing7:

I can see you point, but now how to the stores sell to people that aren't earning a living? I am sure those stores will close. My other scenario is that perhaps an unemployed American will use an American made gun, with American made bullets to rob said establishment.

As far as your points I can address them quickly
1- The clerk is most likely living here, as commuting would be tough
2- Ditto
3- America no uses wampum, and only accepts US currency

Well I think plenty of Americans are creating their own jobs. You have to start somewhere when there is no work available. I remember reading the best way to find work is to create a job for yourself in an existing business. I wasn't able to do that so I started my own business in sales. I'm struggling, but at least I am keeping busy. ;D
