Lockplate from old British Flintlock - Maybe a Brown Bess???

Does anyone have any idea of the age of this flintlock lockplate?

Update// I'm going to call this one solved.. i think there is enough info to date this one... i am going to do more research... if I find something else... I'll post it... I think this is going to get a display case all it's own... a wall hanger...

There is over a century range for King George I, II, III, and IV... But I would think that the lock plate dates from George I, George II, or early George III reign--since British imports to the U.S. were not as common in the years immediately following the Revolution. So I figure it is 230-270 years old.

Hey MB...That's got the same frizzen as the one I found yesterday. The ones on the brown bess look the same as well. Great find.

By the design and evolution of the Brown Bess.. it looks to be the 4th design.. based on the screw placement and over all "look".. but all the ones I found online have Tower stamped on the rear.. this one does have the Tower mark above the crown.. also.. the number "8" in stamped in the band of the crown.. I have not been able too find that either.. so I'm not sure what to think..

Seems like the upper right design is different.. ?? yes, it has the tower proof above the crown.. just not the word "Tower" on the heel.. like most plates I found online..

If you need a lock plate that is musket sized rather than pistol sized, the reproduction plate in reply #50 of this post seems to be exactly right in terms of design, just without the markings. Maybe a PM to Charlie P. to find out what model it is...

I search for the specs on the Brown Bess lockplate and it is 183Mm x 32MM which works out to be pretty much dead on mine.. just a little over 7 inches.. but that also is true for flintlocks up in to the 1800s..

Ha! already bookmarked it! ;-) I still can't seem to find one that "fits" I did find a reference to the fact that the word "Tower" was added to the tail in 1764.. that doe not mean mine is earlier.. but looking at the style... the placement of the screws.. the style of the pan and the Crown and the markings.. I'm starting to think it just might be that early..

Ok.. the length of the lockplate was increased to 7" in 1756 and then decreased again in 1777 per a reference from the book on the Brown Bess rifle.. I think that pretty much does it for me!!! ;-)
