I found two of these 'medals' in the UK. One is self evidently of a traditional baker. The other… a couple with fishing nets maybe? Perhaps part of a bigger set with other themes.

Very high relief from well-engraved dies, but not signed. Not Silver, but some kind of alloy imitation. No point of attachment for a ribbon or anything like that. Both have the same reverse as shown, with a blank area which is obviously intended to take an inscription relating to some kind of award. But what, when and where? The imagery has a ‘Germanic’ feel. Any ideas?

I looked at this for a while yesterday and today.

I'd call them "so-called dollar" coins or tokens.

The term "so-called dollar" has been used by coin collectors and numismatists since the early 1900s to describe a broad range of commemorative medals and souvenir tokens that are similar in size to a silver dollar. Most commemorate American historical events of national or local significance such as world's fairs, city and state anniversary celebrations, statue dedications, famous American battles, completion of public works projects, and others.

The quote refers to American so-called dollars, but they were common around the world.

These could be generic tokens handed out at an industrial expo. The first, obviously, for the baking or food industry and the second for textiles.

All very reasonable assumptions. The ones I've seen are generally pre-stamped for a particular purpose though. These look like they have been produced as blanks for customised engraving with someone's name or other event details. The wreath very much suggests an award or achievement. Maybe these are just two of a larger range of 'themed' medals from a commercial supplier and customers chose whatever imagery suited their own intended purpose.

Heaven knows what the guy and girl with the 'nets' are up to though... unless they're unravelling a mosquito net for their bed. Hilarious.gif
