Haven't had the chance to go detecting very often, but a buddy and I got out today to try and locate a 1700s private fort that once stood in the back of some large farm fields that he thought he located on the old maps.

We believe we found the site, but believe the fort may have been turned into a home after it was no longer needed. We found a few time period items, and also some items a little newer than the fort would have been.

Some of the items found include a 1881 Spanish reale, a 1774 Virginia half penny that I believe was only minted that year for the Virginia colonies. All together we found 18 coppers, some brittish, some early American, with the newest being 1840. And the reale which was my first. We found all the items in one trip and 2 of us hunting for approx 7 hours, in not much more than 1/4 of an acre! To say it was an epic day is a understatement.

Those type of days don't come around all that often.
Congratulations on the recoveries.
What's the silver oval piece in the last picture with the 2 holes?

I was actually going to post that piece in the what is it thread to see if anyone had an idea what it may be.

All I know is that it is made of silver and has the 2 holes in it. A decorative piece of somekind.

great hunt! Must of never been hunted. I had a couple sites that approached that many coppers but that was numerous hunts, and it's been a long time now. harder and harder to find. Love the Reale and Virginia half penny!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FINDS :) Thanks for posting and congrats !!!

You found an old site of something I would say. Will you be going back to see what else you might find?

WoW- very impressive recoveries!! SOunds to me like there's going to be plenty more where those came from- GL!!

Not sure if we will go back or not, my buddy is really good with the old maps and we usually jump around.

Maybe on a day where we are slow to get other permissions we could go back if we are in the area. I have no doubt there are items left, the iron patch is thick and it is slow and meticulous.
