Is it possible ???

One guy did it in the 24th volume of W&E Treasures in July of 1990.

Heres a quik summary of the article in my words:

Ernest L. Mitchell spent a week MDing on cape cod in october.
He just spent a week on a family vacation to disneyland and was a little short on money.
Rather than living out of a motel for a week he lived in his converted van.
He brought coffee cakes, oatmeal, tea bags, and other breakfast foods and such.
All he needed to cover now was gas, supper, and lunch.
His major interest was detecting shallow water at low tide.
He says "I can hunt two hours before low tide and up to two hours after before the tide chases me out".
He arived at 7:00, just in time for the 9 o'clock tide.
By 11 o'clock he was done hunting and had two gold rings, one silver ring, and a pouch full of dirty change.
He ordered a BLT for 4.50 and paid for it in dirty change, the clerk gave him a nasty look.
Next he bought a pint of ice cream! ate the ice cream, filled the container with sand, soap and water, threw in his change shook it up and it was all clean to spend.
Next he hit a schoolyard and had a "good handfull of change".
By 5:30 he was back at the ocean working to beat the sunset.
That night he went to friendlys for a sit-down dinner, payed for it with cleaned change!
For the rest of the week he was able to pay for both supper and lunch plus put gas into the van.
He returned from the cape with all the rings and some of the silver coins he found. He also found a blue saphire ring with twelve diamonds and a very large gold cross.

Now....Iv been to capecod many times, been detecting on almost every beach on the mid cape, plus lots of parks and such. Im wondering what beaches he hunted when he found all this in a week. He must have found loads of change in order to pay for lunch and dinner plus put gas into his van(which was alot cheaper then, but still..)this was 16 years ago, is there nothing left to find now?? Living on treasure would be THE life to live, but is it really possible for someone who wanted to? Has anyone else tried since?

Thanks Ronandann. I'll probably buy myself a fanny pack and do something like that too. Not sure about the plastic bag though. I'm hoping that my MD will discriminate out most pulltabs and bottlecaps. It has plenty of controls for just that purpose. If not, that's what pockets are for, right? Fish hooks may present a problem though. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, I guess. My theory is, why worry about something that hasn't happened yet? SS

If you descriminate out the pulltabs and bottlecaps you will lose a lot of gold. I know gold wedding bands and diamond rings come up as pulltabs on my detector and have heard the same from most detectorists. Im sure some type of valuable shows up as bottlecaps. I generally dig everything including iron (meteorites have iron in them). I just can't stand to miss something. Good luck!

Yeah, I've heard that about gold and pulltabs. After some more air testing, with a 14K gold chain, it rings between nickel and pulltabs, but a little closer to nickel. Also, the chain had to almost be touching the coil for it to ring. This was with surface elimination set to 2.5" too. :-\ The beach mode pre-set seems to be cutting out everything below nickel. So, I'm going to play with the discrimination notch settings a little to see if I can include gold, but not pulltabs. If not, I'll have to include them both, because gold is my main objective. Will turning the frequency and depth/sensitivity all the way up help it to discriminate between gold and pulltabs a little better or will that counteract the beach mode and make it detect salt more in wet beach sand? Hmmmmmmmmm. Now I see what you guys have been saying about pulltabs and gold. It's a fine line. SS

I posted this under "A NIGHT AT THE BEACH" in "Beach and Shallow Water". It's not earth shattering but it is an example of what you can find out on the beaches if you're willing to go just a bit further then most. The complete list of what I came back with last night and a little background is in the other post. My girl friend dropped me off, we watched the sunset, then I started down the beach. She picked me up about 6am, we had breakfast at a little beachside restaurant....THEN I SLEPT ALL DAY!!!!....LOL Go for it, live your dream.

Excellent haul, Deepsix. Is that cross made of emeralds? If so, then cha-ching. I think I also see a small diamond ring in there. Whatever beach you hunted must not have been hunted in quite some time. Good call, SS

Thanx, the cross is sterling with 5 emeralds. The wedding ring has a small diamond in it and the mans wedding band has 3 diamond chips in it. The other is is 14k white gold. The 2 chains are sterling. I was going to go back tonight but I finally got permission to walk some groves for points so early tomorrow morning we're going out there instead. I'll hit the beach again this coming week.

HOLA PEEPS: I have been there and done it, but for land treasures.

There were times of living high, and times where I could not buy a cool coca cola or a cup of coffee, but that comes with the life.

Thee were times of deep dispair and moments of sheer Ecstasy.

I have seen and done things that many will never get the chance to experience, only dream of.

Along the way I was elected into the elite Explorers club, an honor that was the culmination of a boyhood dream.

BUT, the draw backs, after setting up a living expenses fund from each find, I never had a serious amount of capital left for a backup.

Now that I am sitting on top of one of the largest of the land treasures, I am unable to do much because what backup I ever had has gone for other things.

So I am forced to rely upon those that endured the 8 -5 routine for help.

So you see while you may have beautiful memories galore, you may not have the capital when it is needed, for this or simply for medical emergencies..

So think very carefully, remember the world is changing rapidly, new laws are being passed daily, competition is mounting. Beach bums are now starting to be looked down upon and carefully being shuttled out of various areas. It no longer has a rosy picture.

This, from over 40 years of ups and downs in the business. Obviously, if you have any dependents, it is even more questionable.

Think carefully before burning any bridges.
