I don't have any idea what it is, but it sure is an interesting one. Really neat, and my guess would be something to do with opium.

Opium was sold as a paste, rather than a liquid, during the 19th Century in small brass canisters with lids, and paper labels.

Opium

Small glass bottles and vials associated with Asian culture, generally contained herbal and medicinal compounds. I do not recall having seen this particular style of attractive blue glass container, with Oriental characters in previous experience.

Any possible context as to site location and time period of artifacts in proximity may lend clues for our search.

I bought it from a person who won it at a auction in Spokane, Washington. Unfortunately there was no history on the bottle. My guess was also opium but I too haven't seen this type of bottle yet.

Here's a link with various Chinese medicine bottles:

A blue embossed example has not been noted though in these collections.

The emerald green bottle are indeed attractive. These contained medicinal compounds though, rather than opium. 8-)

Opium was a thick paste like substance, that was sold in small canisters made of thin rolled brass, with a snug fitting lid embossed with Chinese characters.

Found this site with some really cool medicine bottles but not this type.

Antique Hawaiian Bottles - Japanese Bottles

Some of the cobalt blue Japanese bottles are quite close in details to the one posted at the beginning of this thread. Japanese origin rather than Chinese may be a distinct possibility.

Thank you for educating me on opium bottles, it took a while to sink in. Since I was a small kid I was digging up those little aqua bottles thinking they were opium bottles, at least that was what I was told.

LOL!I knew I had seen one!It was Beau's!!!

Thank you Beau that looks like the same type of bottle. Yours looks darker. A outhouse pit would make them really old.

sure it is a medicine but found it interesting that one semi similar,is here as a snuff bottle(the gentleman that owns this collection in this link is quite knowledgeable, and if contacted may have further info?)

Very pretty bottle.

I marked as solved. I am pretty confident it is a medicine bottle not an opium and and one like it was found in an outhouse pit which I would guess would put it in late 1800's to very early 1900's. Thank you everyone for the help and comments.
