Life’s a Beach.... then you gotta go home.

Hello again everyone. Hope you are all enjoying a pause in this biblically epic weather we’ve had this year. Predictions for the end of the world seem to have been a bit premature of late, except for a great many people throughout the country who have been dealing with Tornadoes and their aftermath. For all those who suffered loss of property and belongings, or worse, loved ones... my deepest heartfelt condolences. Words can’t fix what you’ve been dealing with. For everyone else... It’s either too cold or too wet or too hot and too dry to be comfortable this year it seems. But we will survive. We might even get to sneak in a little detecting time if we are diligent. Until last week , I’ve managed a whopping three or four outings this year. THREE OR FOUR ????... in FIVE MONTHS TIME! I look to pick that number up a bit soon though. I went out three times last week alone! Well yeah, but it was all to the same location the beach!
My wife Val and I were/still are/ on vacation last week and this week. It’s the first time I’ve EVER taken two weeks in a row for vacation. It was also the first time we’ve ever visited the Panhandle of Florida as well. Destination this year was Panama City Beach.

Beach Bums.JPG

The crystalline white sand beaches, the tropical blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, BEAUTIFUL sunny weather... enchanting to say the least. And I got to go detecting!! <grin>

Sand Hog.JPG

Of course I stayed to the dry sand as my detector is not a “wet” machine. I know the good stuff is just out of reach, out there off the beach in the surf. But as I only get one or at most , two opportunities to get to the beach each year, the expense of a water worthy detector is just out of reach I’m afraid. So, it’s the sand for me. Not that it didn’t prove to be forthcoming. Oh I didn’t get rich or anything even approaching that idea. I did find about $5.00 in clad, and a few odds and ends, a big “room” key, a wine bottle opener and loads and loads of beer cans empty and full! I won’t even mention the pull tabs. <rolling eyes> Oh well, it was fun all the same. And HEY! The weeks hotel stay was paid for by clad I had found since our last vacation (last year). Who says this hobby doesn’t pay?
Unfortunately our stay at the beach wasn’t for the entire two weeks of our vacation. Besides the prices and rates skyrocketing after the Memorial Day Holiday, there were other appointments and commitments to attend to at home in Kentucky. But, that’s not to say that I’ve not managed to get in a good couple of hunts since we got home from Florida. Both at the same location, a favorite Soccer Complex, with about an hour on the first day (before it got too unbearably hot) and about three hours this morning, again before it got hot. The coin found today(and yesterday combined) was quite a bit more substantial than that from the beach last week... all going into the kitty for the next vacation of course. <smile> There were a few bonuses too however. One, a nice pile of reward points caps that my darling missus cashes in for goodies online.

Two, a pair of hooligans... only one I could identify right away... the other, perhaps someone out there can finger for me. <laughing> I’m thinking an “Anime” character of some sort.

Figures.jpg

A Pint Sized Leggo Harry Potter... and whoever this guy is supposed to be. Of course there was lots of the usual can slaw, pull tabs and other assorted junk we see every time we seek to detect. I found some hardware and stuff around the playground, as well as coins and figurines.

Oh yeah... there was one other rather nice surprise unearthed today as well. A little taste of SILVER! Silver in the form of a dainty and quaint little ring. Someone parted company with this little ring at least a year or two ago as it was into or under the grass roots when I found it today. It must have been a favorite because it’s well worn, but I can still make out the traces of a 925 on the inside of the band.

Cool, a nice pretty (DRY) not too hot a day to enjoy my hobby... LOTS of finds... lots of coins... and SILVER to round out the day. And I’m still on vacation for another couple of days! <grin> Still on vacation but already working on paying for the next one as well... this pile of clad will help with that...

... Tomorrow... Movie Hill! Today was the last day of classes in my home-town, and the first weekend showing of “Free Friday Flicks” at the park. An outdoor showing of first run children’s or family oriented movies put on by local organizations and broadcasters. Lots of people laying about on blankets on the side of a hill, in the grass, munching on snacks and goodies from the concession trailers and vendors... I just like to go by in the morning after a showing and help...uh.. clean up. <grin> Everything from clad to cell phones, glasses, car keys... I’ve found just about all of it there at one time or another. Oh fun!
Well I’m off to get some sleep before I detect in the morning. I hope the rest of you can get out and have a little fun this weekend as well. As always...

I really enjoyed your post. It looks like you and your wife had a great time. I hope to be able to hunt down there one day too!

My wife and I did indeed have a wonderful time in Panama City Beach (at PCB?). I didn't really get to detect much while we were there this time around as it was our FIRST time there it was more important to explore... shop... dine out... You know satisfy or pacify the matronly side of the marriage first. <grin> Hey! I know which side my toast is buttered on. to quote a recently popular tune... "If Momma aint happy... aint NOBODY happy..." <grin> Next year, perhaps, when everthing isn't so novel or new, I can sneak in a bit more detector time on the beach. Or perhaps at the Baseball complex just down the road a bit from where we were staying. I LOVE to hunt ball parks and sports complexes. Exuberant parents and spectators tend to lose a lot of change and goodies while... well... spectating at these games and events. The bleachers used to be a good place to look, but now it's more apt that you will find parents and other viewers camped under a shade tree or near the side lines in "camp" chairs or on blankets. People still have to use the facilities however, be they brick and morter edifices or porta-potties set up nearby. And, though most wheel in a cooler of refreshments these days, some still frequent the concession stands or hot dog trailers. Yeah... parks and sports complexes are good places to detect... even if the beach is just a couple of blocks away. After all, it's hard to play baseball in the sand. <grin>

Next year perhaps... we'll see. Gotta keep Momma happy though. <smile>
