LEVER ACTION 30-30?

bueller? bueller?

Jeff, you can get a Marlin fairly cheap new, but a Winchester used in a pawn shop runs about $700 dollars. Very hard to find a good one. I have been trying. The new ones are special editions only and Winchester wants a small fortune for them. Good luck. I had two Model 94's, one in 30-30 and one in 44 Mag. Sold them both when my arthritis got to painful to handle the recoil. Went to pistols only, but now feel every Texan should die with one...

yeah but who wants to spend that much for a new one?

Any specific interest in the 30-30 vs. say a .308? Or a 30-06?

Does it have to be lever action or could it be pump? Semi-auto with clip?

You want wood stock or synthetic? "Classic" or "tactical"?

Scope or no scope?

Are you looking to hunt with it? Shoot varmints? Protection? Snake gun?

....Or is it something to look cool over a fireplace and be taken down and fired for things like 4th of July? :laughing7:

Be careful buying online, they are usually expensive and you take a chance on condition. Gun shows are good too. You can wheel and deal AND check the weapon...

Jeff's gunna clean up that town of his...

30-30 because I don't need high power
Prefer the ease of lever
no scope
for target shooting, mancave wall, and in emergency if burgled

I always like wood over plastic -- well except in catheters

Wood catheters... would be a painful choice.
With your old eyes ,8-) they make lever action shotguns.
If you only own one gun ,make it a shotgun.
A 30/30 is under rated as they will reach out hundreds of yards.
Hand loaded(non-applicable to lever actions unless lever revolution with soft synthetic tips type bullets are used) with spire points ;more accuracy at longer ranges than obtained with traditional safe for use in lever gun round nosed bullets can be wrung out.
A lever is fun but has disadvantages ,(all actions will depending on personal use and preferences) such as when they jam they really jam , too , shooting prone is complicated by trying to work the action while maintaining any semblance of aiming.
Man cave wall = vulnerability of a burglar having access to it before you, as well as probably wanting a lock on it if kids or guests have access to it too.
Calling the police ,fumbling for a key ,rounding up ammo , getting to your gun , all while being burgled.....

Like you, I much prefer wood to synthetic.....so call me a naturalist! :laughing9:
My vision is bad, so no need for a scope.
With bad vision comes trips to the meat counter or tightening the belt lots of notches!
As for ease, I much prefer semi-auto.

With all of that in mind, when it comes to security, it'll be hard to beat this:
Firearms | Semi Automatic Shotgun

It has twin loading tubes, so one tube can be buckshot while the other is slugs - and it's selectable!
Their top model holds 16 rounds and, shockingly, isn't as expensive as I thought it would be. Isn't as long as a rifle or full-choke shotgun, so is easier to maneuver in tight places and around corners, like in a home invasion scenario. It's short-range, which means innocent bystanders are less likely to be harmed. And lastly, being 12.ga, it definitely has takedown power!

It all makes sense now.

You can shove the barrel into the wheelchair spokes as a parking brake. It will be like a saddle gun.

Can't do that with a handgun.

Cross wise through the spokes with the handgun coming to rest against the frame will do it.

I already have a shotgun and 30-06 upstairs
Just always wanted an old fashioned 30-30

I've been eying that SRM mentioned in Post #13, but have been a little afraid. Haven't fired anything with more kick than a full-choke .410 since I messed my neck up 20 years ago. A bit worried about the recoil. But I sure do like that it's semi-auto, plus that you can select buckshot for spread effect or slug for stopping power - all with the flip of a switch. Price isn't bad for all that, either!

Alright Jeff . Got ya.
Here's a guy(Hickok 45) who does reviews.
Pricey , but working a pre 64 is usually a world apart from newer offerings.
The local gun shop gets some oldies in that are slick actioned ,but few 30/30's due to collectors.

also have a siamese mauser, but no ammo and it's so loose I would not try it

You know what you want Jeff. Just be patient and you'll find it. Lots of used weapons out there. Old mom and pop gun shops always have deals. We have a bunch here, don't know if you do. When you least expect it, something will pop up.
