let's start some buzz on the coin thread!

And here's one for Mackaydon. I bought this for $5 not knowing what it is but I think it is silver. I tried a little to find but had no luck. Any help is appreciated. Oh, this coin is larger than the trade dollar or a morgan dollar.

PS: And here:

Cool coin, but it’s not authentic. It’s a fantasy, loosely based on the 1882 one tael pattern coins of Kirin (Jilin) Province, China from the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1875 to 1908). The originals are extremely rare, but there many variations of these common fantasies, some of which are listed and illustrated at the link below:

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?similar=1234820

Note that, even as fantasies, they can have moderate value if they’re silver, but many of the fantasies are actually white metal nickel-copper imitations of silver and don’t command prices above around $20-30 (or less, if they’re recent).

The examples Don linked to are NOT authentic coins.

All of the fakes I’ve seen are cast rather than struck and lack detailed engraving...yet...you forgot to add yet...

I have a friend with the presses and capability to reproduce and strike most anything he would like.... of course he does not, he has way too much to do...however imagine a Chinese machine shop factory, with a couple of dozen presses etc.... AND there are A LOT of these factories.... so, down time on a machine, no orders to fill on #8? ... let's go back to minting a few XYZs. The fakes are getting better and better!

True enough, although I was referring more to contemporary fakes, which are usually cast. That's why you need to check the weight, which even modern counterfeiters rarely get right.

....they will get the weight right....soon too

Red-coat. When I did some searching on the web and found the guy that melted one, he pointed out that the reverse was not 90 or 180 degrees out like all coins it seems and was in fact on a 45 degree like my coin. This is what also makes me think it a fake.

On the larger fantasy coin loosely based on the 1882 one tael pattern, is there any info on weights for the silver ones? I'm pretty good at just knowing a coin is silver, based on sound actually.

I'll get them weighed up. Thanks for all the info...cool thread.

The original patterns were 36.8g of silver, so fantasies theoretically should be close to that. However, because they are fantasies and not necessarily exact replicas, they can deviate from the original weight. I've seen them reported down to 34.28g
