I doubt many remember Arrowheadology
But I used to have a thread about making flipping sticks. I’ve probably made at least 100 and used them for trading permissions on properties. I’ve got a few left for myself that I use for flipping sticks. I’ve been known to use tater rakes but that was before I learned how to make them. I will add some pictures later this evening. There are many types people like to use. I’ve heard of some taking broom sticks and adding a nail to one end. I prefer a discarded beaver stick that is a medium size cause they are strong enough to hold my weight. But if you have a favorite stick post it up.

Looks correct to me. A handle is always nice to have
I managed to get my hands on a really nice Penobscot war club several years back from a family in Maine and I also picked up three others that they had to be used for dancing ceremonies and rituals. Powwow’s basically. It was an offer i couldn’t refuse. Some of them had prior carvings and work done on them but they are all pretty cool. The one dates back to the 40s from what I was told. All the others were made and carved between 1970 and 1985.

But none of them are long enough for me to use as a flipping stick, so I’m gonna have to use my regular Walkingstick for that. Why I have never thought of having a stick to use to flip stones over, is beyond me. Some of us, just takes longer for us to learn.

I use a ski pole, yard sales they go cheap.

Great thread!! Have had many over the years. Here's a few, have a few more somewhere. My FAVORITE of all is Martha!!!! She's the one with the pongs, what a beast from the east she is!! Got her on clearance at an old Kmart store back when when she went to prison. They had all her gardening stuff way in the back and it was $5. Wish I would have bought them all. Heavy duty but lite enuff and as you can see the prongs are straight as an arrow!! Can't even begin to tell the stories her and I have had.

That’s what I call a tater rake. The problem with the new ones are the metal is no good and the heads come off with your weight. I used them for helping me to climb out the creeks up the banks. Don’t trade it in for a new one.

Mine is also my mushroom hunting stick, for pushing tall grass/weeds away to improve the ground view.
It has a copper pipe fitting part way up the shaft to cover a small crack in the shaft. I use it mostly to assist me from kneeling to standing when looking at rocks. I flip with it too.
The thinner sticks I use are sturdy enough to support my weight but yet lite enough to swing it back and forth to clear a path when walking through tall grass. Nothing worse than stepping into a old gopher hole.

I've made many many over the years. This is the one I've used for the last decade or so. Also just made one for Donna my wife. Don't have any pics of it yet and I'll try and get some soon. Mine is beaver-gnawed poplar and hers is beaver-gnawed dogwood.
Nice probe on the end of that stick

It's a flipping mystery to me also, never heard of the term before.
Googled it-got nothing but fishing rods:dontknow:
The stick also works great while walking against the current. Sometimes I will flip and walk at the same time in the water. You would be amazed as to how many artifacts I can find with that technique.
