newbie question here, why do they sometimes have holes in them?

To wear around the neck or sew into clothes whilst travelling, makes stealing your purse/cash a little harder.
 

Here's mine, found it in the same area as 1/2 of an 1851 1/2 dime and a 1828 Large Cent, plus about 40 Colonial era flat buttons (one was a 1820-1840 US military Great Coat button).
