I've got a million things I'll be asking for help IDing, but this is what is currently driving me up a wall trying to figure out. Bottle cap included for scale.

Could be some sort of bale seal.

I've never seen any seals with that hm..shafty(?) looking bit on the back, though I'm admittedly very new at all of this. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nope, we can rule that out.
Looks early 1900s but no idea what it went on.

I've found lead seals like that at a train station, they are huge and i assume from some type of large cargo. No idea what they were used on.

Its not the size that gives it away, its the attachment on the reverse.

If it helps, the house was built in 1910, but before that it was farm field dating at least back to the 1870s. Little ways south of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Part of what was the Great Black Swamp before they started draining it starting in the 1850s.

Early 1900s fits as it looks to be a type of spelter or pot metal. Just not sure what it attached to, if someone could read it, it would help.

Haha, tell me about it. It's been driving me crazy trying to make it what is written on it.

Maybe? But it does give me an idea though. I might try melting some wax and then pressing this on it to see if I can get a clearer idea of the writing. What do you guys think?

Would be reversed... but worth a try.

Also... a "sepia" / "negative"... pic may reveal something as well.

There re a few users here that may alter your picture in this way in hopes of bringing out a / some detail.

But ?

I am by no means positive on my "guess"... and could be totally in left field on this.

But hey...

What do you want for free ?

:)

Well, the ipad mini that I won from work that allows me to do this good of a focus would count as free I guess? :p But yeah, I can give that a shot on my end as well!

I don't know if these will really help much, but I gave it a shot.
