Its a saddle ornament if its stamped brass and lead-filled, we find them at housesites and campsites and it's in Crouch's book listed as well on page 140...sometimes find them without the lead filled back too. I will say that it looks very similar to the buckle you listed as well... the backside would be the determining factor.

Did notice the pic you posted from UKDFD has the cross bar attached on the back while the one of Mike's has the cross bar mounted in the center like the one in Crouches book.

This one doesn't have the lead on the reverse Josh. I'll have Ken forward a pic of the back buddy

That doesn't mean that it still isn't a Saddle Ornament as they were also made without lead too. One difference would be if it is cast brass or stamped brass and that's determinable from the back. :icon_thumleft:

Re: Latest Colonial Bonanza..Coppers and Reale's

Re: Latest Colonial Bonanza..Coppers and Reale's

Nice finds Mike!!! That's a good site. Tennessee Digger found the large version of that saddle ornament type at a virgin Morgan CSA Cav. camp featured in my article "Chasing Gen. John Hunt Morgan" in the August 2010 issue of American Digger. It's the second best find of anything Donnie, Julia, and Roger dug there in my opinion. The best find was a U.S. box plate with a rebel flag scratched in the lead on the back.

Looking forward to hearing you tonight on American Digger Magazine's "Relic Roundup" on http://relicroundup.blogspot.com/ from 9-10 pm Eastern. Don't wear therm out before I'm on in 2 weeks-LOL. HH, Quindy.
