Found by a farmer in a plowed field sometime before 1981. Collected in 1980-81. Made of pipestone, the image of a pregnant woman. This pipe was probably a trade item from the Whittlesy Culture in the Great Lakes region of Ohio. Any idea on the source of the pipestone? Gary

Probably Portsmouth Ohio, but they have found tan pipestone quarries in Illinois as well.

Actually most of the pipes found in the Tremper Mound were from Illinois. The evidence seems to show they were manufactured there and transported to Ohio. Also Catlinite from Minn. accounted for many of the pipes recovered there. Odd that just 40 or 50 miles north at Mound City most of the pipes were made from locally quarried pipestone. The Hopewell did have an extensive trade network and seemed to value exotic materials from all around the continent.
