Had a very short timeframe to hunt this afternoon taking into consideration the tides and my inlaws coming to visit. I only had about 45 minutes but I only needed 10 minutes to make it a decent hunt! I've hunted this particular beach a lot and it is across the river from where I previously found 7 cannonballs...but this is the first one I've found on this beach! This one was pretty deep and has laid within this salt beach for a few hundred years but I'll be able to make it display worthy after a soak in fresh water for a couple years...lol. It's a 12 pounder!

Nice one. another one for the electrolysis tank.

Yep...Just about to email you! Do you think I could do electrolysis without the 2 year soak? And by that I really mean could you do the electrolysis?

Nice you got a big end of year surprise! Good luck with the restoration!

Current restoration process has it buried in a snowbank in my back yard...I'll remove the outer crust tomorrow and get it into fresh water...then off to ZDD for a couple months in his electrolysis tank.

Nice twelve pounder!

About your restoration, you could use electrolysis, and you could soak it for months and months, I'm sure those are a few options, and no doubt they will bring the results you seek. I'm into getting it done in a more timely fashion I guess , so my only question is really, do you own a hammer?

Don't laugh too hard, it's quick and easy and I really don't feel any damage could be done considering its present state, some will poo poo on this no doubt, but I've had satisfactory results with the estwing method, something to think about

Ha, estwing method, I like how he thinks.
Nice find, good work.

Something i've done with seriously rusted iron relics more than once. Letting them sit outside over the winter and rust come off easily even with slight tabs of a hammer. Electrolysis can be done after the bad crusted rust is removed to get rid of the left oxide.

Cool to see you still out there pulling some good finds Romeo! We are getting killed here in Maine with snow, ice and freezing temps. Supposed to be -20 to -30 wind chill a couple nights this week then another 12" on Thursday night. Hopefully this crap slides by you guys. Keep up the good digs Romeo,
Help

Not at all...I always use a hammer or my shovel to knock off the outer crust...it's such dense iron that no damage has ever occurred and only the corrosion has been removed. Even after the hammer though it will need to be soaked and treated with electrolysis to remove the salt from within the iron...if the salt is left in the iron it was crystallize and split the ball into chunks. Cannonballs found on "dry earth" are so much easier but this one has been in briny salt for at least a couple hundred years.

By no means am I a physicist or a chemist, how does electrolysis deal with salt in iron from the sea?
I feel that many soaks in fresh clean water will diminish the salinity in the iron and protect from the ravages of crystallization and thus help preservation, I wish you luck in your endeavour

To tell you the truth I have no idea...I think it just speeds up the desalinization process...maybe ZDD will chime in...he's got a ton of iron that he's preserved from the deep blue sea...

A couple before and after pics from this morning. I almost left this on the beach yesterday when I first dug it because it was no where near spherical. I was able to chip a piece off with my shovel and saw what it was. This morning just a couple well placed whacks with a hammer and the thick scale chipped off. Now into the fresh water and electrolysis.

now that's a great way to put an end to 2013 romeo! I was always curious about the other side of the river...it looked to good not to hold those old balls! Congrats on a great year!

This opens a lot more potential for more balls...feel free to make the trip...we can hunt this area anytime time of the year!

That's what I'm talking about, a good long soak in fresh water and some rust remediation, good to go
