Hey folks!

Figured it was time to do another write up about what I’ve been up to. My hunts aren’t as regular these days. House projects and a puppy will do that to you!

This is my 9-week old Fox Red Lab, Atlas.

He’s been a joy but a lot of work.

Anyways, I know what you all came here for; coins and shiny stuff! Here are some recaps.

9/22/20

Got out to a well-hunted park and started getting a few wheat pennies in a concentrated area with scratchy signals. I hunkered down there for about 2.5 hours and no joke got 51 wheat pennies out of a 6’x6’ area. I have to imagine people passed it up before because there were so many mid-tones that it sounded kind of junky.

I also got some old nickels including a 44-S war nickel, 2 dateless buffs and a couple other early 40s Jeffersons. My previous high of wheats in a day was 26 so this pretty well blew that out of the water.

Tons of the wheats were from 1944. Made me wonder if it was a lost roll? Or maybe the site of an old concession stand or penny hunt? Because they were so concentrated I got a few steel cents as well which is always fun.

Got back to the same site and picked up 5 more wheats in the 6’x6’ pocket. I wandered around after that and did manage to get over a silver, a 42-S Merc. Total wheat pennies that day was 19 and I also got a WA tax token. The Warranted Superior doodad is from an old handsaw.

The 28th was one of my better hunts on the year. I started digging some wheats out of gravel but each one was taking me probably 5 minutes to recover. Eventually I wandered away and got my first silver of the day, a Merc!

Shortly thereafter I was getting a 24 signal a few notches deep, figured it would be a wheatie. First thing I pulled out of the hole was a war nickel which is awesome! I haven’t gotten a lot of war nickels with the Nox but I know that was probably too high of a tone.

Turns out there were two more Mercs in there as well. Score!

A while later I was working that same general area and got a 26 signal a few notches deep. Figured it was a penny but was super surprised and pumped to see an SLQ!!

On my way back to the car in the dark I got one more silver, another Merc.

Here are the totals.

So altogether a dateless, no-mint, type 1 SLQ (most likely a 1917), 4 Mercs (25, 27-D, 42-D, 42-S), a war nickel (43-S), 20 wheats (including a 1926-S!), 1.25 Tax Tokens and a KGVI Canadian penny.

10/4/20

First outing of October! Tried a new park with some decent history. Unfortunately it was filled but I did manage to get a dainty 925 ring.

After that strikeout I went back to the honey hole from the previous few hunts but couldn’t get a silver coin for the life of me.

I ended the day with the silver ring, 11 wheats, a WA tax token, a 1919 Seattle Transit token, part of an old buckle and part of an old cufflink.

10/6/20

I got dinner with a friend who happens to be renting a 1920s house with a small yard in the city. Told him I had my detector and asked if I could give it a swing and he obliged! Super glad I asked.

After doing 90% of the yard I had two wheat pennies. I was feeling bummed but that’s the way these things go sometimes.

I got a shallow 28-30 (Nox 800) on one of my last few passes and gave the clod a flip. No way! A 43-S Washington. I was so pumped to get silver. I saw it had a stain so I stuck the pinpointer back in the hole and got another silver quarter! I was so shocked to see a BARBER. What the heck? It’s a 1908-O (only my 3rd O mint ever). Also got a couple wheats out of the hole, the latest of which had a date of 1944.

Can’t believe these quarters, from 35 years apart, were found together. I’ve never heard of a Washington and Barber in the same spill before, has anyone else? I presume it happens because the closest dates would only have a 16-17 year gap, I was just super surprised

That’s all for now. I’m hoping to get out this upcoming weekend, weather permitting. Good luck hunting and living all!

Haha!! Great write up.

That last entry was great. I thought the type 1 slq was the topper, but nope... the quarter spill tops it off!

The quarter is a 1917, the second Smaller hair curl tells you.

You've had some good hunts even though the time limits have now been set with Atlas.
Congrat's on the silvers and all the coppers.
Puppies are over-rated-that was the comment in our household after getting our Max-18 trips out a day-winter. Life revolved around his needs.:laughing7:
I will say this no matter what they do/chew/poo-nothing replaces not having one in the household.
Altas you're a keeper!

Great write-up. That's a big spread of years on those quarters. Good digs.

Wow!!! That’s a killer couple hunts Wash!!! I got a barber quarter (1899) and Merck spill last year, I think the merc was mid 1920’s which I thought was a little strange but some folks don’t look at their change I guess and when everything was silver, I doubt anyone cared much, money is money. You did a lot better than I did on my last hunt, I got a bent 1917 wheatie and back to back foot deep D buckles that sounded like silver quarters, anyway, that’s part of the game. I’m leaving for Tennessee tomorrow to hunt some new permissions south of Franklin so I hope my luck changes. Great job brother!!!!!!!!!!!

About the 51 wheaties - i reckon it was a spill of a roll.

The dates being similar, and the concentrated area.

excellent finds. I'd bet the 6x6 area was where a concession stand once stood. There was a tiny spot where one once stood next to a baseball field in our local park and I found over 40 quarters (clad) where it was years ago.

Even with a new nice puppy ,you managed to score some fabulous hunts.

Several excellent hunts! You got one of each on the 3 quarters! :occasion14:

Sweet finds Washingtonian. What an amazing chronology of your hunts. Thank you for sharing.

That Pup is going to turn out a loyal best friend to you and your family. Don’t forget he’s a puppy and he is learning and wants to play all the time. Be patient with him/her.

Nice to see the old coins. How do you locate your hunts. Google Earth, Zillow, old maps, Historic Society, old Photos/Post Cards.. just curious.

I agree with the old concession stand location as a reason for all the coins in that 6’x6’ area.
With contactless payments future concession areas will no longer have clad like they used to.

Fantastic finds and pictures! Your best find might be Atlas! He is a good looking guy and all the attention now will result in a best buddy for sure! Thanks for the great reports. Congratulations.

Thanks Woody! Appreciate the comment and insight about the 1917 SLQ. I never knew that about the hair curl. Good tip!

Thanks so much! He's been awesome so far. Like you said, a lot of work. Happy to have him though. Hopefully when he's a little more grown up I'll be able to get out a tad more!

Thanks so much! Yeah! Pretty wild. You can tell that Barber was well handled too. Definitely appears to have been in circulation 35+ years.

Very nice! Good luck out there! Yeah, I know my dad has always collected coins and he said that he could occasionally find a Barber even in the 1950s. I guess you just never know!

Right. Probably 30 of the 50 were from 1944. I was initially thinking maybe it was an area that they spread hay and hid coins in it for kids to find at old picnics.

Very well could be. Too bad that wasn't 40 silver quarters. That would've been insane!

Congrats on the very productive hunts! :occasion14:

Grats on the PILE O TREASURE and thanks for sharing.

Thank you! Yes, very happy my wife is still giving me some grace an letting me get out a bit now and again.

Yeah! If only it had been in a single day it would've been a Quarter trifecta! I'll take that though. Those are my only Barber Quarter and SLQ of the year. Been a little bit of a slower year on the big silvers.

Thank you for all the well wishes! I use all kinds of methods for finding my spots. Public stuff (like parks), old books with photographs (I love the 'Images of America' series), Historic Aerials, pulling data from local cities about construction projects, etc. I pretty much follow my intuition wherever it leads. Sometimes it works out, other times not so much.

Thanks for the nice pictures

Thank you! I've learned well from some folks on this forum and others.

Thank you! Atlas has been a champ. Lots of work and lots of fun. Hopefully more shiny stuff to report soon!

Freaking impressive...and awesome!

Thanks so much! I appreciate it!!

Congrats on the great finds and good luck with the new puppy !
