1 1/4 inch buttons are only 32mm and many are that size and even bigger. Most that size are from the later 1700s and were the popular button to use up till about very early 1800s.
Attached some of my big buttons, they usually but not always have some type of design on them, usually hard to see unless cleaned of all dirt buildup. the 1.44 inch button is most likely not from the late 1700s, but not sure.

Cleaning dirt off only, if no dirt is let leave it as is. A wet Q-tip rubbed in areas that look dirty will let you know if it needs further dirt removal or not.

Yep You don't want to clean them to much. I use reconstituted lemon juice. Mix it 50/50 with water. You have to watch it though. It will get the crud off fairly quickly but if you leave it to long and the button has any gilt or silver plate will can take them off.

1790s ish :icon_thumright:

Its lost all its gilt cover, so no need to clean anymore, it will only take off the patina.

Okay, I found something. Is this a large colonial flat button? It is very thin, and seems old from the color / patina. What is odd to me is that there is no loop or way to attach the button.IMG_20160920_142303.webp
