Detected at a local park for 1.5H and came across an unusually large spill of 9 coins. (Sorry no pics - Camera is being loaned out)

5 - Quarters 3 - Dimes and 1 Penny

Someone had lost a load of pocket change a couple years ago. The coins were found at a depth of 3"

4 of the coins were stacked one on top of another! Never seen that before!!!

I'd be interested in hearing what you largest coin count was for a spill (or cache)...

I didn't really count how much it totaled but one morning I was working a median between the streets on a boulevard and found a spill. I spent a good hour finding coin after coin just barely below the surface, mostly quarters and several dimes. I'm guessing about 150+ coins and it was heavy enough for me to go back to the car and unload it before I continued on. I think it was where the paper guy rolls up the newspapers and puts them in a plastic bag on rainy days? I have seen bulk newspapers dropped off there since. Monty

When I was a kid the local firehouse and police station would set up a coin toss at intersections that had alot of traffic. There would be a big barrell and as you drove by you would toss coins in but of course many people would miss. You may have come across an area like this.

I'm not sure what my biggest one hole take was but I had a hole at the park that I kept pulling two or three pennies at a time then rescan and there would be more. After 25-30 pennies I got tired of picking up the pennies and just filled the hole in. If I pulled at least one nickel, dime or quarter I would have continued but no just pennies.

great find!
my biggest spill wasn't really a spill but a whole roll of dimes. we found the whole roll in the ground, ,the paper was rotted but you could see they were in a strait line on top of another.

I have had several, but my two favorite that come to mind were 33 and the 50 coin one that was over $8. I actually believe that was change hidden by panhandlers in a park. The 33 I thought for a minute someone might have put it there for me to find intentionally it was just piled up, not even covered!

The only coin spill that comes to mind right now was a single hole,8 inch. deep , with 15 silver quarters in it,(all washingtons),. I could not believe all the silver edges i saw. This was about 1975 or 1976 I guess. I hope you find a lot more coin spills! HH

my largest spill was next to a lake in an old park in riverside, ca.

i found 10 old coins.

2 mercs, 2 rosies, 2 late 40's nickels and 4 wheats. all in one hole.

Gotta love that feeling when you pull out an old coin, recheck the hole and hear another sweet signal!

My spill find wasn't in the same hole rather just beneath the surface over about a 2' square area. Most ever in one hole was a roll of pennies with just wee bits of the roll paper still clinging to them. I started not to dig them as the size was all wrong as indicated on my GTI 2500. But it was such an odd signature I decided to dig it out of curiosity. How many in a roll? Fifty? That's how many in the same hole. Monty

Depends on what you call a spill...first "spill" was in a Park in southwestern Indiana and it included 36 wheat pennies(all 1917, 1918, 1919, 1920) and 13 Indian Cents(all 1907). Second "spill" I was hunting with Terry N and he posts on other forums so some may know him. Was across the street from his house and he had hit it a few times with his XLT. Hit a strange signal beside the trunk of a cut down tree and pulled 54 coins, includeing 46 wheats(all in the 40's), 1 Buffalo Nickel, 2 War Nickels, 1 1946 Nickel, 3 Mercs, and 1 silver Roosie. Everything in the 40's except for the Buffalo(1937). He just sat down and watched and couldn't believe it. I hit a spot after a fair last year and recovered about 120 coins just in the area of one of the rides and 245 in a very short time there. Total cash amount was $23.60, but I think hoosierfinds who posts here found more, but he would have to verify his totals. All I know is he was using his Bigfoot coil and that thing is a clad magnet!!

I consider a small "spill" (<4-20) to be coins or valuables lost from someone's pocket/purse and a large "spill" (>20)to be from a dropped money till or the equivalent. A honey hole would be an example.

I would define a "cache" as an the intentional burying of valuables (in a ground money vault) for the sake of hiding which typically have larger quantities of valuable items in them.

Others may agree or disagree in part with my definitions but everyone would agree that spills, honey holes or caches are one of the best finds in our business. Sweeter if they consist of old coinage or valuable gemstones! I'm still waiting!

My largest dollar amount that I found was 3 $20 all folded up that had been out in the rain and sun for quite awhile. They were stiff and hard. I found them under some bleachers.

14 wheat back cents for me. A kid must of buried them as they were all dated 1943-45. Oh and there was a lead toy also in the hole.

Its been awhile since I have been on the forum, got out for a short time Last Sunday spent 1.5 Hr. at the School-Park that gave up all those Ring's, no rings this time just 6.25 in Quarters haven't counted the other coins yet. Theres a park just down the street from this one I hit awhile back that no mater where you put your coil it hits at-least Zinc Penny.
Unfortunately I have been working to much and not much time Detecting :'(
All most forgot, Shame on me, also with being busy my Son Brandon Shipped off to the Army Today, he just called, he just arrived in Missouri.

The first pocket spill I ever came across was at my old junior high school, $1.30 in change (4 quarters, 3 dimes). My son found one early this year at a ball field, I believe it was a total of $1.45 (5 quarters and 2 dimes).

Earlier this year in a private yard I dug up over 50 Lincoln memorial pennies and a coin from Israel all in one area on the side of the house.

About a month ago I found 15 wheat pennies in a 1X1 foot square area in someone's back yard. I came up with 12 more in the surrounding area for a total of 27 wheats in one yard, which is my current record for wheats.

The largest amount of coins I ever found in one hole was found about 10 years ago, when I dug up over 400 pennies all in one place in a friend's back yard..I made a challenge to myself I would get them all out until my detector stopped beeping..it took about an hour but I actually did accomplish my goal. The total penny count for the entire yard was close to 500..I put them all in a mason jar and gave it to my friend, who said his girls may have buried them when they were playing outside one day.

My biggest "cache" was in 3 holes about 1-2 feet squared. I pulled 40 bucks worth of quarters out. It was in a park in Long Beach. I hadnt had my 250 but about 2 weeks. In that same park I found 116 coins along one side of the park where the homeless would sleep at night. That was in an area of 10' X 30'. I just recently found those again in my travel trailer. They are now in the coin bucket. lol. TMAN...

Back in the late 70's I found about 56 wheats in a pile about as big as a fist. I think they had been buried by a kid. I think the newest one was 1952. This year the biggest pocket spill I have found was 9 quarters and a few other smaller ones in one hole.

Haven't posted it yet, but found 6 nickels and 1 quarter in the same whole yesterday. I'd see one, put it in my pocket, swing again, and there'd be another one. Just a reminder to newbies, always check your wholes to make sure you got everything. I learned this on this website from all of the veterans when I first started detecting earlier in the year.
