Large SPHERES....what are they?

Found this in an field where farming has taken place for years and years...any ideas at all? I'd guess it to weigh close to 20# total. The rod connecting the two spheres is solidly attached and about 3/4" separates them. Also, the rod is about 1" in diameter.

Here are a few more pics of the visible seam on one sphere. There is no visible wear on the sphere's themselves. Also, there is no visible wear on the shaft either, if it appears that way, then the photo is misleading. I also took some shots of the shaft/sphere junction. It appears as though the shaft is welded to the spheres. It also appears that the metal used to construct the spheres is different from the shaft - but that is just based on looks. I weighed them and it weighs 17# total, not a guess but actual weight. Any other questions?

The "seam" on the one sphere appears to be just that, a seam. It appears as though it is slightly offset...as in the 2 parts didn't line up exactly. The other sphere doesn't show any seam or uneveness at all. The only other thing i could think of, is could the "seam" be actual wear associated with a "ball and socket" type connection? It doesn't look consistant with wear from coming in contact with the ground. Just a thought.

Doc, You came close, but not close enough to win the battle of Waterloo, Napoleon lost also because of this miscalculation heheh.

Napleon had developed the technique of having his cannon balls strike just in front of the opposing troops. Upon impact with the ground. the ball would send many many rock fragments into the troops similar to a shotgun, inflicting many more casualties than straight ball would. The ball would still traverse the same no of ranks of the troops.

As You mentioned, it had rained heavily the night before, and when his cannon fired in the usual form, most of the balls simply entered the rain softened ground and did not rebound as they normally would have, hence his artillary was ineffective.

Upon such simple overlooked or miscalculated things the world has been changed many times.

Look what the English Long Bowmen did to the French knights at AGINCOURT.sheehs.
