I never heard of it used for the other things, but then, the pairs I have are old, and I got them from my old farrier, and he did "hot" shoeing, so, he really was a blacksmith, I guess.
I have been waiting for you to get in on this one.....You are good at these horsey tools........wtg. ;)

HI (GAls especially) I made and used thinigies somewhat simliar in assaying for handleng hot crucibles You would pick up the thingie with it's molten rock/metal materiel, then gently pour it into a seres of cone shaped molds. Obviously you needed a firm grip or else!

Unfortunately the picture isn't quite that clear so ??

I've also seen something similar to that and it was used to close a "C-shaped" clamp. Something like the clamps that are used to attach the solid wire to the bottom of a chainlink fence so the fence can't be lifted so easily.
