I am always running to the garage sales down here in the swamps most weekends....Saturday I went to one in the lower rent side of town. This was in a box of mixed pins and a few american medals. The guy said his grandfather brought it back from ww-2 along with a few other items..
I took a chance on it and gave him $20.00 for it. For those in Germany or experts here in U.S. What is it and is it real? Plus worth if known. I got several other items I will put up later. It has very strong, sharp detail.

From the wear and pitting on it, I am inclined to say it is probably original. Plus several of the other items I obtained are in the same aged condition..I hope some experts view it now. It is too well detailed, even the lines on the balloon are strong.

Not an expert in German memorabilia, I'm into U.S. but have handled my fair share of these awards over 30+ years and would say you have yourself a real dandy there. Yes, repops are qite common but don't believe you have one there. Glad for you!

Great find!

The N.S.F.K. (National Socialist Flying Corps) was created in January of 1932, to promote interest in aviation throughout Germany. The NSFK was very closely associated with the Hitler Youth (HJ) organization. Events by the NSFK involved model building with flying competitions of the completed projects, educational classes related to aeronautics followed by building and flying actual glider aircraft. Glider flying was the mainstay activity of the NSFK, although ballooning and balloon competitions were also held by the NSFK.

I believe I recognize your pin as the same one shown in the book entitled: "Das NS-Fliegerkorps - Die Vorschule der deutschen Flieger" (The National Socialist Flying Corps) by Arno Kehrberg as published by Verlag Bild und Buch Anton Schuhmacher in Berlin 1942.

It seems to appear in the book as shown on this page; (though I can't read the small print)

Nobody likes to be the bearer of bad news, so I'll keep this brief.

I sent the photos of the badge to a good friend, John Conway of Manion's Auctions John is a militaria expert who specializes in 20th century air service items. Here's his reply:

"Thanks for sharing the photo. Unfortunately, this is a repro worth about $10, as opposed to a real one at $5,000 or more."

DG: Bummer that it turned out to be a replica. At least you have the history and value as if it were an original, and can now weave a great story around that object that should be worth well in excess of your cost.

I was wondering if Mr. Conway could share what makes this a fake. It help take the guessing out of future purchases if there was an easy way to know.

I ran the number on the back of your badge and its coming up with the year 1939...does that help?

He cited the numbered reverse and also the style of the pin.

As a matter of fact, Manion's previously had an identical reproduction— right down to the serial number!
