A guy in our metal detecting club picked this up at a flea market or garage sale.

It's a very large medal ~ the only writing on it is the guys signature that I can't read! The edge reads MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y. - BRONZE.

It measures about 2.75 inches in diameter ~ it's about twice as thick as a US silver dollar ~ I bet it weighs 4 ounces, maybe more.

Any recognize the dude on it? Who is he?

THANKS!

PORTRAIT MEDAL OF ARTURO TOSCANINI, (1952). 67.5mm. Bronze. Leonard Bistolfi, Sc. (MACO) The obverse features an attention commanding portrait of the famed conductor in his middle years facing left while the reverse simply bears his facsimile signature. A fine-looking portrait medal by this rather obscure artist.

Value in this condition is around $25.o00 or so.

Re: Large Medal or Medallion?

I thought it might by Twain. There are certain similarities, and the clothing is the right period. I don't know, though...

Re: Large Medal or Medallion?

I wondered if it was the person depicted or the artist.

Somehow, I don't see this outfit doing Stalin. And the collar and tie look more from around 1900. They were commissioned to do some that would be pretty obscure when they were done for an organization of university. I hunted down a photograph of a Frank Billings who seems to have been depicted on one done for a medical school, but he didn't look all that much like the man.
