Hey, zoysters, the group and I got out to a new site. At first, we were trying to locate a new Colonial site that was in a wooded area, but it was too overgrown. You dudes should have seen us walking down STEEP declines. At one point, KirkPA slipped and fell, but recovered himself like a pro. He was laughing the entire time, but I heard the occasional curse word coming from his metal detecting mouth.

We couldn't find exactly where the Colonial site was located, but I think we will be back soon. But, I did do some ra-search on this site the day before and pinpointed another coppa-era site. So, we worked ourway through the foilage, jiggers, spida webs to this next site about 50 yards into the woods. On our way there, I saw a toytle (turtle).

After about 15 minutes of datecting once we got to our destination, I got a "Quarter" hit at 3.5". KirkPA watched me dig up a nice Coronet cent. KirkPA and Paco congratulated me with about 5 minutes of handshakes....this is what the hobby is all about, dudes!

NOW, to the best part of the day. I was gridding the area where I found my coin, when I heard someone "hooting and cursing." I looked up and saw KirkPA running with his detector while the entire time he was swatting at yellow jackets that were swarming him. He had about 10 bees on him and after each time he killed one by smacking it, he would state a really bad word that started with an "F" and ended with an "R." After I helped him out a bit, I asked him where his shovel was at. He stated, "Over at that dang hole...I was getting a perfect 50 VDI at 1.5"." Once I looked over at it, I noticed a swarm of yella jackets on his shovel...I would estimate close to 1,000 were buzzing around the hole he had dug. So,if you dudes want to know where Paco, KirkPA, and I are detecting, search the rugged terrains of PA and if you notice a blue digging shovel sticking out of the ground, detect! There are coppas still in the ground!

As Grubby would state, "White's strikes again." As Grubby would state, "Only the tough get the good stuff."

Re: Large Coppa

I was a lucky dude today. I thank my creator for blessing me with speed and toughness. Without those two attributes, I would have been some meat for those yella buzzas. :D

I probably got stung about 10 times....one time on my left ear, 5 times on my right arm, and 4 times on my left arm.

Zoy, we will have to purchase an Epinephrine pen for future hunts. I am thankful for not getting an allergic reaction. This was the 1st time I got stung in about 15 years.

Oh, awesome coppa, brotha! You make Mr. Coronet a happy dude! :D

I pity my relic shovel...that sucker probably got stung about 1,000 times. :D

YES, only the tough get the good stuff!

i can relate big time to those little yellow freaks !! hit 3 nests in a weeks time..... :P :P :P :'( :'( :'(

Re: Large Coppa

Nice "copper" (my slang for coppa). Hopefully you find more copper and fewer yellow jackets. Those suckers are mean! I knelt down on one md'ing and it stung my knee right through my levis. I am glad Kirk is ok and more pumped up from the experience. Good job PA dudes, you guys ROCK!

Yes, I am fine, bud. When I got stung, my nursely mind when into action. My 1st thought, "We better get out of here for now."

I didn't know how my body would react to the stings. I haven't gotten stung in forever, so I was watching for the signs of an allergic reaction that may need some medical attention.

My luck: getting a 50 VDI and digging into a nest. :o :D I was down to about 8" when I remember hitting something hard...after that, I don't remember much.

Re: Large Coppa

The beautiful thing about yellow jacket stings is that they sting...first. A day or two later, they start to itch; you really have something to look forward to, Kirk. Oh, and nice Coppa!

Re: Large Coppa

Glad you fellas made it out ok!! I dug into one a few years ago and got nailed 3 times in the face...had em' up my shirt, shorts....AHHHHH!! Bad day..... :P Left the shovel just like you did... :'(

Great find!! Good to see some good stuff being dug! ;D

Re: Large Coppa

old timey southern trick that really works-- for "in the feild" pulling the bee posion out -- take a good bit of tabbaco from a smoke -- spit on it a bit to make it sticky -- apply it to the sting site & cover with a bandana or similar cloth--burns a bit at first but will pull the bee sting juice out and ease the pain of the sting--works for infection type swelling too-- no BS --it does work --its one of the few good uses for tabbaco-- Ivan

No, Rich, you are the zoyboy's metal detecting idol. If you, Paco, KirkPA, and I keep find goodies at this rate, central PA will be hunted out in less than 5 years. :D

Re: Large Coppa

Good find there dude. Tell KirkPa that a REAL man would have stayed and kept on digging and ignoring the stings!! :D :D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Re: Large Coppa

Didn't you have long sleeves on? ;)

Dude,

Glad you're o.k. You'll certainly want an Epi Pen next time because one can become allergic to anything at any point. My first encounter with those F(*&^ers ten years ago left me allergic. I found that out when I had a run in with them last summer for the second time. Only got one sting that time, but it was BAD. Get some bee killer stuff with a 50 foot spray and go get that target!

Yellow Jackets Strike Again!

Not so tough that you could get you shovel back. :D

Good things come to those who wait, in your case it was a swarm of wasps (as we call them).

Better luck next time, when you put your bee suit on and go back :)

I would mark that target with something...a big rock, flat stone, small flag etc. Then go back after it gets too cold for the little b@$t@rd$ (ie just before the ground freezes or is frozen). Then dig up the target. Then the nest. Find the queen (I like to call queens a name often used in dog shows to refer to a prized female) and squash her and all the larvae (ie the penalty in my book for just one sting). Or, it can be done quicker with a little more intestinal fortitude. Find the exact point where the little b@$t@rd$ are coming into and out of the ground. Go back at night, pour about a cup and a half of gasoline or two to three cups of kerosine down there and light that sucker. After a couple days go back. Some will still buzzing around the hole kind of POed that they can't find the entrance. These can be taken care of with raid but...the reason for a little more fortitude...they are going to be pretty POed and come after anything moving within 50-100 feet of the hole (ie bring your epipen or take about a pound and a half of benedryl before you start digging that relic).

Nice find Zoy. Sorry to hear about your misfortune Kirk. I ran over a huge nest when I was a kid mowing the lawn. Got stung about 50 times. No fun at all. If i didn't think it would start a forest fire i would say go back and pour some gasoline in the hole and set that thing on fire but I wouldn't recommend that in a wooded setting.

Got to love those nice OLD American coins! That is a beauty ZoyBoy. I definitely respect others who search and recover items like these. Such a "Vulgar display of Coppa" ;D ;D ;D It gives a person that nice warm feeling inside ;) ;D

Zoy,
Hilarious! LMAO. ;D I can just picture this event. ;D ;D ;D
Congrats on the great find.
By the way, what was the word that started with "F", and ended with "R"? ???
Great post guys.
