Hi Everyone, It all started on Friday with a extra hunt day Scheduled. My 5 yr old had to be signed up for school so my wife took the day off.

Me and my boy decided to go back to the soldiers cellar hole as I call it and see if we could start to listen for those deeper signals. There was so much metal at the site in the 0 to 6 inch range that we needed to get it out of the way before I could concentrate on the deeper older items.

Well it panned out great. The day was cold about 30 but we bundled up and went anyways. After about maybe a half hr into the hunt I got a faint but slight chirp of the tone i.d on the dfx in the background. I took a shovel so I could get real deep this time. Well after about 3 digs down into the hole maybe a foot or deeper pops a large cent with three holes drilled into it.

I looked at my son let him hold the large cent and said o.k it's about time. It was about 12 to 14 inches deep. No lie so I took a pick to show you guys. I know it's hard to tell but I have no reason to over exaggerate.

We continued the hunt and about a hr later I got another good signal up against a tree. This time it was only a 7 inch signal and read good and loud. One shovel full out and then another and there it was. Large cent number 2 with a hole above the head. It would have got deeper but a huge root blocked it.

I managed to find 2 flat buttons and another button with the 6 star on it witch I still don't know what they are. No back to this one either.

We were now into the hunt about 2 hrs or so and he was getting cold so we packed it up and I took him to get something to eat. At that point I was more than satisfied with the hunt.

Saturday my son sat out but Lance decided to make this hunt. I found another really nice riflemans button and one more flat button and some other neat relics to go with it. It was getting slow but I did find a Roosevelt and some other neat things while there. They must have been lost by hunters.

The large cents were dated 1817 and 1836. The bell had a patent date of Oct 24 1876 and May 14 1878

I invited another friend to come and hunt with us. He didn't follow my directions into the place so I had to go on a man hunt to find him. He eventually made it and found a neat token but not old. It was dated 1962 and was good for 5 cents in trade.

It was a really good weekend we had alot of fun and I need a rest for a week . I am beat up from all these hunts but it's really hard for me to stay in.

Thanks for looking

HH Jeremy

Congrat's on the large cent's,button's and relic's...Pretty cool you got to take little man with you, mine just turned 3 and he's already got the headphone's on and swingin.Put a couple penny's in the yard and let him listen..nothin' but smile's and congrat's from Dad.Quick Q....this may sound dumb, but what's with the hole's in some of the older coin's I've seen posted?Thank's for sharing and good luck on your next venture!!

Thanks guys. I have heard alot of different reasons for the holes in coins. One to wear on a string or chain like we do today. Cheap peice of jewlery and it could still be spent.

The other witch I think was the more common reason was for the fear of losing them. They would sew them to a coat or wear them around the neck. I guess you never knew when you were going to need a coin in those days.

Not like leaving your wallet at home. You could just cut it off of you. You only had a few shirts and pants if that. So it would always be with you. Alot of get out of the house quick situations. Indians raided this area often and there was a fort nearby. They would burn homes and such. I know I would want atleast my money if I was going to lose everything else.

Hope that helps some. I think they lost the first with one hole and said well three holes would last longer and still would be spendable. Imagine 4 buck skins equaled one cheap shirt in those trading days. 4 Deers for a shirt. We have it easy. I think I could have made it in those times though.

My son loves to detect also. He has to have atleast a digging tool when we go out or your not hunting. I'd let him hunt but the dfx is a little to expensive for a 5 yr old. Waiting for white's to come out with another top end so I can get it. By then I think he'll be old enough and understand it easier.

Awwwww, Jer. He's a cutie. :)

Nice hunt. Thanks for all the details and for the great pictures.

Way to go
But dam them for drilling holes in em
guess with no pockets you had to hang them from a string.
But 3 holes I don't get it.

Good little scout you got there.

Nice finds Jer, looks like your little buddy is good luck. Tsgman

Thanks guys. Yeah he's cute and a large handful. Having 2 boys is a real challenge. These guys never get tiered. No problem on the picks. I wanted to get more of the creeks and the actual pile of rocks that were there.

I'm looking into digital cameras right now. The thing that sucks is I have a really good camera that cost over 200.00 and is only a few yrs old. I hate replacing things that I don't need. I also have 2 scanners and one cost 500.00 dollars. So I have been taking picks and just scanning them. I'm sure the wife will waste the money though and get one anyway to keep up with all the technology.

The holes did suck but I have found like 10 early coppers this winter already and these were the first with holes. One I found was in AU almost. Take the good when they come and the bad when they come. One more hole it would have been a button. Makes me wonder if it may have been used as one.

Thanks Rtde, Good to see you are still around. Your right spending quality time together is priceless and no one can take that away from us. My boys are really close with me beacuse I have raised them. They wouldn't make it if I wasn't here for them. Were gonna have many more fun times through out the years together. He is my best little hunting buddy. He rarely never turns me down to go out. One day I'll tell him how much it means to me.

Great post. Thanks for sharing it with us. The best treasure of all are your kids!

Great digs!!! I bet your boy is hooked.HH ;)

Thanks guys, I can't wait till there older and I can get them there own units. I loved detecting since I was 13 and picked up a eagle spectrum. I was hooked ever since. My son is so much like me and says he wants his own detector already. He picks it up in the field while I'm digging and tries to swing it. It makes me a little nervous becuase I don't like my unit dropped.

He could probably swing a few pound detector if I had one and cut the bars down to fit his height. He know's what wheaties are buttons relics.... He's been to so many sites that it will be natural for him one day.

We will be able to really do some damage once there both older.I let him dig and use the pinpointer for right now. Plus he walks around picks up marbles and shards and anything else he see's. It's a great hobby for a kid.
