I found this 1827 large cent in Eldon in Miller County, MO over the weekend and when I got the dirt cleaned off of it I noticed it had something inscribed into it. E.B. Thomas, MCH.22

Can anyone tell me what the MCH.22 is or why someone would do this? I have looked everywhere I could think of online trying to find out who E.B. Thomas is but can't find any reference to him.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Just to let everyone know, We have found the descendents of E.B. Thomas.

My wife Becky and I will be leaving next Saturday (May 30th) around 5am to present the coin back to E.B. Thomas' descendents. The presentation is going to take place at The Great Southwest Historical Museum in Ardmore, OK around 5pm. We will take lots of pictures and also get any newspaper articles that make it to print. 3 different newspapers have been invited.

This was also posted in the General Discussion area http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,244564.0.html where Treasurenet member Ron and Ann (Annmarie) found it and was able to help me track down a living descendent.

Thanks everyone for your input in helping me identify this item.

Don

That is a dream thing to do in my books, congrats (although I would have kept the papers out of the loop, never been one for publicity)

With as much bad publicity as this hobby gets at times, I think that any chance to get good publicity is worth it. I am not a very outgoing person and to be honest I don't like public settings but with so much interest in this find there wasn't going to be anyway to do this privately. The family that is receiving this item is the one that named the location and also notified the 2 local newspapers.

Wow, I just got chills after reading those pages from the book. That is a truly amazing find and an exceptional effort in locating the descendants. This definitely belongs in the Best of Treasurenet.

I totally understand that, just not my thing.

Wow, pretty interesting thread. My apologies for reviving an old thread, but if anyone ever needs a counterstamp looked up, I have a copy of Brunk's book. Rich didn't mention it, but Brunk indicates in the front of his book that at least two of the same counterstamp needs to be known as a requirement to be listed. That prevents a large number of one off personalized counterstamps from being listed, most of which will never be identified.

If anyone is still interested in this find you can read about our search for a living relative to return the coin to in a post on the Honorable Mention area of TreasureNet http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,244564.0.html I have also written an article about finding the coin and then returning it to the Great, Great, Granddaughter of the name inscribed on the coin that will be published in an upcoming issue of Western & Eastern Treasure magazine.
