Large Cent & Silver

Took a trip with my good hunting friend Tom and met up with Joe G for a hunt in Long Island. We were swinging all over these grassy areas where farmlands once stood. It was pretty obvious that these places were not going to produce silver, but we kept going anyways. In a signal that jumped from dime to quarter on me came out what at first looked like a clad quarter, then I figured it was a token, but closer examination and weight led me to believe that it was an older copper coin. Tom and Joe looked at it and told me I had a Large Cent. I'm not too familiar with these. I know it's an older coin, but couldn't appreciate the find as well as someone else could've. I took photos in the condition I found it and photos after doing a few peroxide baths and Q-tip treatment. I think I'm going to leave it alone for now. I now know what people mean when they refer to these as a "Look what I found" item. There's just not much left to these things.
The next day I still needed a silver fix bad..........went out to one small pounded little park for four hours and came out with nothing..........two hours later I went to another small park where I had found two rosies and worked it until I found the merc dime below. I don't believe I would've made it home that day empty handed............it was a dig until something comes out kind of day.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Way to stick with it Ricardo. Congrats on the large cent as well.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

I agree that it looks like 1803. Nice draped bust large cent Ricardo.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Nice going Ricardo....I wish I was more familiar with the LC's myself  Congrat's on the silver as well!!

Re: Large Cent & Silver

This LC was found in a little park in THE Prototype American suburb. There was an old church and graveyard across the street, but the last thing we expected to dig at this site was a LC.Rick is a silver guy and was not very excited about his find, even though Joe and I were.He would not believe that this was a better find than a common date Merc, but I think he was disappointed he got got no silver. But Rick is persistant and I knew he would score silver the next day

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Great job man...an LC any day of the week is great..

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Rick comes up to me and asks, "What the hell is this???". Without cleaning it off, I said, "That's a freakin' large cent!". Rick was unimpressed :) From what we could see, Tom and I were sure it was a draped. Pretty amazing considering where he found it. That was the last thing in the world I expected to see there. I do believe I will put on the large coil and give that place and the surrounding area the once over just for the heck of it :D

Congrats Rick! It may not look like much but that's a pretty cool find for this area!

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Rick, that large cent is a nice find!! But I know what you mean about needing your silver fix!

Congrats,

This is funny. :D :icon_scratch:

Hmmmm....200 year old coin sucks! :icon_scratch: Common wilvers are MUCH better! :icon_scratch:

Oh well! :icon_scratch:

I guess I should say, keep the passion high! :icon_scratch:

They don't suck my Colonial friend, it's just a shame they don't hold up too well. I've seen the ones you guys dig up and wish mine could've been somewhere near as good in conditionl. Between my LC cookie coin and a nice SLQ, guess which one I'd rather have under the coil? Nonetheless, that LC did what gold/jewelry has not been able to.......it caught my interest to seek out another down the road.

Best,
Ricardo <----Modern "Wilver" afficionado.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Good deal on the Draped Bust LC.

Nate and I ponder such things as "What would you rather find?" "A crappy LC" or a nice Barber Dime? That's an easy one if you have found LC's (Barber Dime wins). Now a "crappy draped bust LC" or a nice Barber dime.....that would be more difficult since I have not found a Draped Bust LC.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Wow, that's a draped bust large cent! No matter what date it is, it's still a good find, and even in the condition it is in, it is still an early coin to own, and a rare piece of early history. HH M.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Hey Ricardo whats wrong man?. :o

Those LC's are up there in price and rarity. :icon_study:

Beats a common Merc or Rosie any day. :tongue3:

In fact i'll trade you the silver dime I found yesterday for it. ??? ;D

Harry.

Re: Large Cent & Silver

Awesome draped bust! I don't think I'd care about its condition as long as I could make out what it is..seeing the silhouette of the figure alone would give me quite a rush.

Amazing how you can still make out the date considering how long it's been in the ground.

WTG
