Re: LARGE CENT HELP!!

Interesting. I presume it was or was meant to be, 1840/something.
Any chance of a closer close-up of the date area?

Re: LARGE CENT HELP!!

Here is a question and response from coinworld.com. I know that sometimes people like to brush some mint errors as very minor and common, but I do not think your coin is all that common if it is not altered. I like it! Here is the text from the article and a link to the page.

My coin is missing a Mint mark, words, letters or numbers. Where did they go?

Your coin most likely features a filled-die error.

A filled die occurs when grease, dirt and metal particles compact into a die. The dies that strike coins are recessed so that when they strike a planchet (a metal blank), the metal of the planchet rises to fill in the die. That's why letters, numbers, words and designs are raised on coins. If the recesses of the die fill up with sludge, (which is a very common occurrence in a factory like the Mint), this sludge will prevent letters or numbers from forming during the strike.

A filled die is a very common form of minor error and does not add numismatic value to the coin. Filled die errors are known on every series and denomination of coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint – from the very first large cent to the State Quarters being struck today.

And here is a link to the page with the article, it is the second question on the page..

Yup, looks to be a filled die error but a spectacular one. Congrats on the great find!

Thanks Tim. It definitely looks untouched :icon_thumleft:
What do you think of the question from mick56? Is the T in CENT another fault?

Re: LARGE CENT HELP!!

The top pic is for comparison. The date is in a straight line. The bottom pic is from the first post. The two mumbers that are there look like they would be in a curve. It doesn't look like the date would be centered under the head, and the 8 looks upside down to me, too.

the placement of the numbers looked funny to me to. maybe 1844 from looking at red bk pic ?

Re: LARGE CENT HELP!!

I think this coin is more than a fill-die error because #1 the numbers are in the wrong place; #2 the 8 is upside down; #3 the "T" in cent is upside down. BTW, nice find! Breezie

Re: LARGE CENT HELP!!

There are dozens and dozens of varieties of the 1840s Large Cents, it is just one of the varieties, dates vary on placement, size and style, for example, this one appears to have a pointed 4, whereas in 1846, it appears all the 4's have blunt noses in every variety. The year 1844 is a possiblity, but no way that could ever be told from Red Book, you need a book containing all the varieties to narrow it down. If I had a book on the late year large cents I am sure it would have been identified by year, but I don't and I spent time on auction sites and thought I had a match with an N.6 for 1846, until I saw the blunted nose of the 4 and not a pointed one. Just too many varieites to look at on the computer and nail it without spending endless hours, unless one gets lucky. If anybody has a Large Cent book, they should be able to get the year for this coin and variety..

The coin could be a die fill or it could be a mutilated coin, too hard to say from photos without a very close inspection, many things were done to Large Cents, and making date changes, word changes have been seen..........Several over the years have been posted where the word CENT was changed to another word, not going to be mentioned, but if you seen one you know what I mean.

Re: LARGE CENT HELP!!

I don't think the T is upside down. It appears to be a filled die as well. Looking closer at the T you can see the right upper part is there, or appears to be. Maybe think about sending that one in to PCGS or some other reputable coin joint. Might be worth it. What do you think? Nice find and very unusual as not many if any are posted like this. The 8 also has what appears to be a double stamp in the upper left area. :icon_scratch: Congrats. jgas

Thanks for adding the bigger pics. The coin looks legit to me.

And in pretty good shape for being 1926 years old. ;D
