Is the button for sure pewter. Cause it looks like it was a lid and that the spot on the rim on the back may have been hinged. And for the large cent, these things pop up sort of often. Carved, engraved, & counter stamped coins are cool. Who know who or why they carved into your coin, but I think it gives it personality. Cool finds by the way!

Not pewter.. copper or brass most likely. Notice it has some of the same orange color as the large cent.

There's 2 piece buttons that are very close in design.

I know, I'm not saying it is. I'm talking about matching it up to a button to ID. I probably have one here ... what it reminds me of anyway. They are very common in the UK.

Reading my post I can see how you thought that.

They are interesting and I will keep it in mind, and mention it to anyone I happen to talk to who I think might now.

It's not one I have here, but the site I got it says Navy button, but I have seen mistakes there before. That said, I'm pretty sure it's common so fairly modern British Royal Navy would make sense. Even though it's very close I'm still not sure we can say they are connected, but might as well start somewhere.

British makes sense as mine came from Australia, but as stated before, all and mine included came from gold fields that were only active during the 1850's......what do you mean by "modern" :icon_scratch:

I thought of those buttons as maybe a little over a 100 years old. I wonder if maybe something like merchant navy which might explain why they seemed to travel. Any idea if British Navy ships ever took supplies to your area?

People from all over the world rushed to the gold fields, and it is not uncommon to find Navy oriented buttons and buckles.

I like the piece of buckle.
IP & Kuger. I had a Navy button, like the one pictured, with a Treble Gilt backmark which would put it early to mid 1800's. Mine was nondug and I sold it on ebay.

Thanks "V",that kind of confirms my suspicion. There is so many variants of that darn anchor and the design was used for so many years!!

I'd have to see that one because it doesn't ring a bell and I have a lot of experience with dug British anchor buttons. Your post did make me think of another similar one that seems early, and never has a backmark, but I question if it is Navy.

Being there is so many types is why I don't get confident even it what seems like a good match. Heck, I don't think the anchor on the boys brigade buckle is real far off.
