I haven't had time to get out much, since I'm teaching Intro. Geology 5 days a week. Plus the drought and heat. ;)

Went to Sandy Creek Park over the weekend. It has a $2 entrance fee, but also a nice sand beach.

Hit the tot lots and they were CLEAN. ??? Found 1 penny and 1 dime near the metal post, and one stray quarter. Also, almost no trash. So, I was thinking this area must be hit by others. Sure enough, there was a guy in the water already when I hit the beach. I'm a land detector, so I started on the dry sand. I didn't do to bad with $3.83 in clad, but no jewelry.

When the guy came out, I introduced myself and learned there are a number of people hitting this area hard. I have to admit, the beach was really trash free. Pictured is all the trash I found in 3.5 hours in a tot lot and on the beach. Almost every hit was a coin. :P

The other MD'er was as nice a guy (named Bob) as one could hope for. We talked for about 15 minutes and he suggested I check out the Silver Seekers national organization. Anyone here a member? Bob is the first MD'er I've seen in Athens, but he says there are a few active ones around. That explains some of the meager finds. And I'm also very grateful for how much I've been able to find so far! ;D I only need 5 more quarters and 38 more nickels to hit my yearly goal of 100 of each type of common coin.

I'll have to start looking for more "private" area to hunt.

Cheers.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it. When I get some time to research more properly.

Forgot to mention: Not pictured is the set of master lock keys I found. Padlock type. Figured they might be park staff drop and not typical visitors. Turned them it at the office when I left.

Pretty good for a well hit place. Keep em coming!

Hey, I'd say you did okay! :)

It's not the amount or value of your finds!
Success is measured in the amount of fun you had; you did have fun, right? :)

62 nickels means you won't miss the gold. Great job and best of luck to you.

Thats a good haul for a place that is being hunted hard. You are either real good or the others are really bad. I'm leaning toward you are real good.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I can buy a year pass for me and wife to visit anytime we want (and kids, but don't have any yet ;) ) for $30. I'll have to think about it since it is within 10 miles of my house.

Yeah, I had a great time. I was worried when the tot lot was empty. Things picked up on the beach. Heat and the beach filling up where the only things that stopped me. :)

I'm pulling the foil signals all the time as well. And the Disc is now only at just below nail. The red clay soil around here makes me keep some iron disc.

I'm hoping the gold isn't slipping by (I don't think so ;) ).

Thanks, but I'm probably just lucky. ;) I'm not a fast swinger, either, which probably counts for a lot. I'm thinking they have all synced each other into not MD'ing the place anymore. I can hope anyway. ;D

I think you did pretty good on the beach. All those coins look OK to me. Just a suggestion. You can use your detector in the water. All detectors are waterproof up to the detector box. The coil is waterproof. Just be careful when you lean over to scoop up the target. Don't get the box wet. Get yourself a water scoop, one of the hand held ones.

Also another suggestion is lay some jewelry down and check your detector and see if it picks up what you are checking. I call it a test plot. This holds true with any detector. Some people buy detectors and think that they are going to go out and be able to dig all kinds of goodies. Then after awhile they get discourged because they can't pinpoint the target. That's where a test plot comes in. See where the target comes in on your coil.

You might lay down a necklace, a man's ring, a ladies ring, a quarter, a dime and so on. sweep your coil over these items and see if you can even pick them up. Maybe your discrimination is to high. Or maybe it's to low, if your picking up nails. Just a few suggestions, hope they help.

Good Luck, Ringfinder

I forgot to mention that I belong to the Silver Seekers Club. I have been a member for many years and will be attending Treasure Week near Shreve, Ohio July 14 & 15, 2007. The Silver Seekers help put on the hunt with other clubs and detector dealers.

HH, Ringfinder I also am a member of the Black Swamp Metal Detecting Club from Lima, Ohio
