Dug today at a 1940s-1950s home. It looked like a thin brass belt buckle. After cleaning the dirt off, I could open it and open an inside compartment. It reminds me of a Lady's Powder or Make-Up Compact. . . But it has a curve to it like a buckle. About 1.25" x 2" COMPACT 1.jpgCOMPACT 2.jpgCOMPACT 3.jpgCOMPACT 4.jpgCOMPACT 5.jpg

I'm thinking it's a makeup compact as well.
It's small, so a pillbox or a match safe would make more sense.

It's a shame that your pics are so small, I'd like to expand on the front.

It may just be my eyes playing tricks on me, buy I think I can see a bird with it's wings out stretched. :icon_scratch:
This often symbolizes mourning the loss of a loved one.

Nice find,
Dave

I see an elephant facing left and taking a dump in the red circle .
I'd go with a match safe as well.

OMG! I probably wouldn't have thought of that but now I can't UN-see it!

Thanks, y'all.... Doesn't look large enough for matches. Maybe a Compact. Should I try to "clean" it further? Any suggestions?

How and how much to clean is always a personal preference. :icon_scratch:
Some folks look at 'restoring' a find to be a sin, while others like myself think it makes them more presentable for display.

I tumble a lot of my finds with heavy verdigris, that way I can decide how much of the 'patina' I want to remove to make the piece more palatable.
Over time after being exposed to the air, the metal will darken down and have a more even, less 'shiny' look.

Here are some pics of my 'before & after' tumbled finds.
Dave

PS. I'd be happy to tumble your find if you wanted me to.

Thanks again! I'm afraid to tumble it because of the two sets of hinges. I guess good old elbow grease will do.

it may sound strange, but put a bowl of peroxide in the microwave for a couple minutes, then put the piece in for a soak, reheat it and dunk it a couple times to get the organic dirt off, then dip it in tarn-x to clean the hard to get to places and polish it up with brasso

Yep, sounds strange. I won't have time to clean it before our October Tomball metal detecting meeting on Wednesday, but maybe later in the week. I'll post the results if it's significant.
Thanks for the input.
