Lady's compact yields Stander and Barber quarters.

I was detecting along the edge of an old multi-purpose athletic field today when I got what I thought was a wheat cent signal. My E-Trac was reading 12 - 41, which is normally a wheat cent signal, at about 8 inches deep. I dug down to about that depth, but didn't see a target. So, I got my handy-dandy Garrett pinpointer out and twirled it around in the hole. Sure enough, there was a target in there a little deeper. I dug my digger in there a little deeper and pried up what appeared to be a big bottle cap. I flipped it up out of the hole and it fell apart exposing a greenish silver coin, a Standing Liberty Quarter. What I thought was a bottle cap was actually a lady's compact or maybe a pill box. I twirled the pinpointer around the hole again and got another signal. There was also a Barber Quarter in there. Nothing else.

Here's the compact and coins:

Here's the same coins after a half hour soaking in lemon juice:

Thanks for looking.

To clod chopper.......Only speaking for myself, have over 20 years diggin. All I can say is knowin your machine sounds, years of diggin targets, and yes all the targets you mentioned. After a while you just go on intuition on a sound, where your at diggin and myself its hard for me not to dig iffy sounds so believe me I dug a lot but I also did very good more than not. Your time and experience will start paying off for you. In the mean time enjoy yourself and HH

Cool find! Thanks for posting.
Shame the person didn't stash some uncirculated coins.

sonofa............I mean nice find.

That's cool to find those old quarters in there. I've dug a few compacts but never anything good in them.
Congrats on two great coins!!

RayRay...not the answer I wanted, but it's what I expected! I'm paying my dues, just like you had to. My greatest tool is the internet. I will search out guys like you, and pick your brain! Keep the advice flowing!

That's pretty cool.way to go

vpnavy, Good to hear from you. I'm an old VP Navy man myself. VP 46. The Squadron was stationed at Moffit Field in California. Don't know where they are now. Also, I'm a PA guy, too, living in Delaware County. Take care and good luck.

clodchopper, I was digging for what I thought was a Wheat Penny at 8 inches. I had no idea that there were silver coins with the target. When I flipped the compact up out of the hole it broke apart and the silver coins spilled out. You're right, though. Sometimes a piece of can slaw or a bottle cap will give a similar signal. You just have to go for it and take whatever you get. It depends alot on the area you are searching, how much junk you are finding. But alot of times you just have to take a chance.
