Our plan was to cover 2 small Roman sites in 1 day - objective met.
In the morning we started on the L Shaped Wood Site but even with a deep plough this minor site was disappointing with only 2 scrappies, 2 buttons, & a Roman Pin. This site only took us 2 hours to cover.
The 2nd site is a small area next to the Roman Lion Site, that we will now named ''Sestertius Hill''. (Lost count but it must be close to 10 by now) The 4 Sestertius I found on this day might be close to a record, but overall numbers were low with just 5 Bronze Coins from a site that took 2.5 hours gridding.

Neolithic Flint
Nice Roman Brooch (Star)
Roman Bracelet bit
Nice Sestertius of Ant. Pius.
Broken Roman Silver of Elagabalus AD218.

Overall another low yield but pleasing day out.:icon_thumright:

We popped in to see the owner at lunchtime & the daughter was there, we shared out the finds including the Chicken Brooch which they took.

No, but it was probably best not to. I think you may have to look at it Friday & do a go/no-go decision.

Congrats to you both on some more interesting stuff
I suppose Cru'Dad did help with the 1904 Penny, 1 scrappy & part of a Roman Pin.

The flint is gorgeous! A gold or silver bezel around that and you have a killer pendant! Sub 8-)

Very nice Sestercius i say! Rare in this nice condition. The bracelet frag is also a nice find, not seen this decoration before. But i like the scraper most. It looks like an imported stone... I don't remember seen this brownish translucent flint in any of your posts. :icon_thumright:

That's an excellent Roman Brooch with enamel completely intact! That must have made your day. Cheers

I've had a couple of this type of bracelet before, I think I've seen a few IDed as late Iron Age, but I'm sure they are Roman. I've had quite a few different flint types including, black, brown, a mix of both, plus other types like grey & whitish, I have no idea where they came from.

The deep plough brought up this one in a lump on the top & I saw the edge, first thinking it was a coin. The plough just scrapping the edge enough to show. So I was surprised to see the brooch when I cracked it open. All the blue is there but the central red enamel star is missing, & so is the pin, so a good find, just not an excellent one.

Wow!! Great finds!! Even broken I'd be thrilled to find that Roman silver, the age of your finds are incredible, way to go!

Congrats and HH

IT KEEPS GOING AND GOING AND GOING ,WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY . NICE FINDS.

I always look forward to your finds. Congrats!

I've never seen a Roman relic with so much intact enamel - Nice ! The Antoninus Pius is beautiful !! Good honest patina on that one . What is the theory (best guess) on how/ why the silver coin gets broken like that ? Plow ?
