KY Gang with Secret Codes???

I am trying to identify a family criminal gang which operated in the Ohio Valley during the 1930's and maybe later. They were involved in theft, con games, gambling, and possibly bootlegging. According to the story I heard, they left behind a secret code which they invented (written) to identify their cache locations. Has anyone heard of a family gang which would fit the bill? Thanks.

There was a similar story from around SE Kentucky. The only name I remember was Hamilton; I believe.
