I have been trying to get some pictures of the Kookaburras where I go fishing. They only let you get so close before they're off to the other side or fly deeper into the forrest.
I had to really stalk this one. Most of these were taken through peek spots no bigger than a drink coaster between branches and leaves which show in a few of them.

It had dropped and caught something in this last one but unfortunately it all happened too quick to get a good picture before it was gone. I think it caught a small skink.

Thanks mate. If I was younger and fitter I actually think I would have liked to have done that.

Thanks for sharing, beautiful bird!

Yeah man, you got some excellent pics!
I left my reader glasses at home. I always take them as although my long to medium distance eyesight is still perfect, up close I need reader glasses. So to me everything on the camera screen was out of focus. I couldn't tell when or if anything looked ok. Back in the car I scrolled through them and they all looked stuffed to me so I drove off thinking "drats forgetting those glasses". Even when I got home I said to the misses "you wouldn't believe it, finally get to take some pictures of a kookaburra and I left my glasses at home, theyre all blurry and rubbish". 😂
Thank goodness for auto focus.

Fantastic shot of the birdie! Congratulations! Thanks for posting them.

Great Pictures Chilli How do you get so close or is it telephoto lens ?

Encountering a kookaburra in some Aboriginal cultures can mean good luck. This is because a kookaburra can bring positive change, whether that's in an upcoming circumstance or the arrival of good news. Not only does seeing a kookaburra signify good luck, but the laughter can also mean a signal of rain coming!

Here is you tube clip below of a kookaburra laugh

I had one tapping the window every morning making sure I got up. they get territorial but recognize family members they are related to. Some times they will have turf wars with magpies.

Hi mate. Yeah maybe the kookas are the antidote for Willy Wagtails. They to the Aboriginals are, the wagtail, a death bird signaling the death of either the person seeing it when it comes close around them or someone they know.
They are mind blowing and have a hunting technique I have never seen in anything else. I was detecting yrs ago and thought my detector or headphones were playing up. Weird electrical, electronic sound. I wiggle the headphone lead, the battery lead, the coil lead. Nope. But im still hearing it on and off.
I finally realise it was a Willy Wagtail hunting. If one is lucky they will see them hovering about 4 foot above the ground emitting an electronic sounding noise. Its not remotely a bird noise, you'd swear it was being made by something electrical. I can't even begin to explain it, maybe buzzing clicking!? So what happens is that noise draws out some type of insect from under the leaf and bark litter to investigate, obviously a sound they make to attract other insects of their own kind, then the Willy swoops and gets it. It's amazing to watch. Hopefully one day I'll get to video it. This is a willy but its not my picture.

The Kookas laugh, apart from the traditional Aboriginal meanings, is actually a territorial call which they and those in their group, typically family members, make as a warning to other kookaburras not to come near them. Kind of like "this is our turf stay away". Any other one stupid enough to try gets attacked. They do kill other kookas if they get into a fight. They even fight each other when young to establish the pecking order so to speak. So the laugh isn't really friendly even though it sounds like it is. Tough birds. Those beaks are weapons.

Hi Gare. I have a Kodak bridge camera. AZ528. Its in the affordable range for that type of camera. I like it. Image gets pretty shakey at full stretch on the lens when handheld. They were handheld. I got most of those taken through gaps in the leaves and branches. Imagine im say 60 foot away from the bird, and I can see it through a small gap, about drink coaster size between branches 15 to 20 feet in front of me, between me and it. Zoom in, let out a breath slowly and hit the shutter button. It doesn't have a traditional view finder just the screen. I do at times miss the old view finder style.
