You will have to forgive me for what I am sure is a very dumb question....I am going to post a pic from the web. I have circled a few that I have found a great deal of material that are similar. Is there a specific name for these? The pieces I find are mainly spalls and flakes. Some do have worked edges but no sign of hafting. Any help? IMG_9178.JPG

Look up Lamellar blades.

Ah, very interesting. Do the pieces need to be worked to have been used? I’ve knapped for a few years now and know that when a spall or flake like this comes off, both sides would have surgical cutting ability so I would think sharpening would not be needed. Anyways would you all agree that unless it has sharpened edges and or a haft point it is just flake material?

Whatever they said.:laughing7:

They were used to scrape the fat off hides for curing, mostly

That’s what I didn’t understand...I’ve been a big game taxidermist for aver a decade now. And I’ve done my fair share of scraping hides and fleshing. And a flat blade would be a struggle when one could use a rounded thumb scraper or palm scraper. I dunno. So interesting!!

You can find use wear on the long edges, but that doesn’t mean it was animal hide

Blades like that were used as they came off the core. They go dull very quickly and are tossed even though they still seem sharp. They are still sharp, but not razor sharp. No amount of retouch will bring them back to razor sharp. These blades were not used for skinning/fleshing. They are too sharp and will cut the hide. A large flat beveled knife is much better for skinning as it doesn't cut the hide. Your blades were used in making the initial cuts in the hide and also for cutting up the meat. I've experimented with this in the past and that's what I discovered. I skinned a beaver with core struck blades and the skin was full of holes/cut marks. I skinned a coyote with a beveled Thebes knife and it worked beautifully. Gary
