Could it have attached to the hilt? Looks like something was broken off on the one end.

Awesome. Looks like part of a hilt from an early 19th C smallsword. The smallsword was the personal weapon of choice for gentlemen of the late 18th & early 19th C.

You might want to post this on a sword forum or contact a blogger interested in these swords. I looked a little more and to my eye this piece could easily be from the early 18th C.
