KKK silver medal. Need opinion's. If KKK is distasteful to you. Do not open.

I obtained this medal this weekend. It measures 1 and 1/4 by 1 and 1/4 inches.
It is sterling Silver. It has been cleaned. The image in the center is Nathan B. Forrest.
Raised letters on back. Very good workmanship. It appears to probably have been hand cast and trimmed.
We know all about the organization. I just want opinions on it's authenticity.
Thanks!
DG

Thanks Kid
Although there is some doubt, I believe the medal is old and has a good chance of having some providence.
I have seen tons of repro items. Most all repro stuff is pure junk, crudely made.
. This is a medalion version of the watch fob. I can just make out the w&h
on the bottom on back.
I feel good aabout it, but there is always room for doubt.

I agree yours has that old feel to it, it's an interesting collectible item for sure.

I'd bet my detector... well at least my coil it's a modern fake. Nothing about it looks good to me.

Quite possible. It is older than it appears because the previous owner made the sad mistake of polishing it.
He had it for over 20 years. It is sterling and the detail is sharp but worn.
So I place it in the toss up side.
Who knows for sure?
It just has a better aura than hundreds of items of KKK I have seen.. Most cheap and poorly made.

I find the KKK most distasteful due to their violence against innocents among other things but I can still open it and discuss it. I don't think a reproduction would be made in sterling if you are certain it is sterling (.925 silver content). The brass/copper ring attachment also looks like its original; a repro would not use these expensive type metals would it?

That is pretty much the way I feel.
I placed the warning from past experience. I wanted to stay on subject.
Some people tend to just want to express their dislike rather than answer the original question.

The backmark looks like W C versus the Whitehead Hoag mark. It looks cast to me. I think a repro. Sterling or not, the originals sell for $250 + so why not use sterling in a cast repro? JMO

I agree with the back mark. I tend to believe the originality is a coin toss because I know how long the last owner had it. Also he made the mistake of polishing it with a soft silver buffer, which was a grave error. That being said..who knows?

I realize this thread is from 2011 and now it is 2016. However, as a 40 year collector and dealer in exonumia (web site: exonumia.com), I must set the record straight. This is a modern copy in silver-colored pot-metal. While marked "sterling", the ones I've seen are NOT silver. ALL originals were made in bronze, ALL those in silver (silver-colored metal) are modern copies made recently. Stories that the previous owner had it 20 years are just that, stories. The manufacturer of Whitehead & Hoag were professional medalists, and issued sharply defined, well-struck medals (and badges, etc.). This poorly cast copy shows casting marks and is of inferior quality. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is not original. Don't believe me? Take it to a coin dealer who has one of the new metal composition detectors, and have him check it for you.

Interesting thread with lots of different angles and opinions. I've learned things. Also, history is not always beautiful. Vast blocks of time are ugly with no argument, but that is still history and it has tons to teach us. Those who choose to ignore the past are condemned to repeat it. (credit who ever said it, I'm not that deep)

Back in high school, a couple of my friends went to another good friend of ours house (I wasn't present). While they were there they saw a "huge oil painting" of a man (General Forrest) dressed in KKK regalia. They asked what was up with the painting and the friend (who's house it was) reluctantly told them it was a painting of his great-great-great grandfather. This friend still shared the family name.

Items like this always remind me of that story and that friend. Here was this family who had this antique painting that had been passed down the generations to them. It was a piece of fine art, a family heirloom with historical significance as well as family history for them. Yet, it was (understandably so) hidden away in their basement. I don't remember ever seeing it myself but it was always described to me as being very large and beautifully done, museum quality.

I agree with exo, it is doubtless a modern reproduction and a pretty poor one at that.
