Detector(s) used
Garrett AT Pro, Equinox 800 (as of 10/2019)
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I did a little detecting Sunday at a field that abuts a currently occupied colonial era home. I was mainly gridding the random areas of tall grass that had settled down low enough to detect. After about an hour of hitting just about nothing, I got a somewhat faint 19 signal on the Equinox. It was steady in all directions, so I thought I might have an Indian Head penny or a button. I dug down about 9 inches, I think, and was pleasantly surprised when a larger sized copper revealed itself (just under an inch diameter). Given that the few coppers I find are almost always slick or barely recognizable, I prepared myself mentally for the disappointment. I took the coin home, and sure enough, nothing was showing on the coin. I tried a gentle scraping, but the green surface was coming off with the consistency of powder. Since the coin was obviously shot, I decided to scrape the surface completely off to see if anything remained at all underneath. Happily, King George's face appeared almost out of nowhere. Encouraged, I took the same approach on the other side, but got no details at all. While this coin is not much to look at, I was happy to find such an old coin and at least get an I.D. (If I am mistaken about KGII, please let me know.) I see so many nice coppers on this site, and hope to find a better one again someday for myself. Good luck out there, and Happy New Year!
