Just kidding of course, but I did find a screamer Paleo point today in SE Nebraska! I am thinking Hell Gap. Base and bottom 1/3 is ground smooth as silk. Am I correct on the type?

Dolphin effigy in Nebraska would be saying something!

Yes, you got my attention but screamer Paleo point would have drawn me in as well. Very Nice! :icon_thumright:

Oooooh! I like that G10 centerpiece. Looks like a Classic Hell Gap from the books I have.
Great Paleo artifact!

Interesting. I wonder if there was more base there originally. That one sided, steep flaking on the bottom of the base almost looks like a repair.

Some Hell Gap points have more base than your example displays.

I was thinking the same thing.... Either way great find.

Very nice Hell Gap made of Smoky Hill silicified chalk (Smoky Hill jasper). Other names used for this lithic source are Niobrara, Republican River Jasper plus a couple of more names that are rarely used. Generally the stems on Hell Gap points are a bit longer and as others have mentioned the base looks like it may have been broken and then reworked.

Hell Gap points are one of the more elusive paleo point types to be found in the Great Plains region. I would be very happy to find one like that, especially one made of that material.

The base doesn’t seem to be re-worked, but one side seems to have a flake taken off of it that runs all the way across. It almost looks intentional. The other side doesn’t seem to have any altercations. I can’t be sure though because I’ve never held another Hell Gap so I have no frame of reference.

Here is a pic that shows what I’m trying to describe...
