Here's the scoop My son has a birthday coming up in two weeks March 12th and he wants a metal detector.
The question is I have a budget of 3 to $400.00 for what I am going to spend. What Detector should I get him. What I want for him is a good Coin-Shooter & max depth. What is your feedback.
The kids picks & choice's are as follows: Please be open minded when giving your choice.
Remember coins & depth is what he wants what are the {pro's & con's} of each listed below.

Whites Coinmasterpro

Ace-250

Minelab Xterra -305

I am being open minded. I am going to let you charter members make the call on what unit to get Samuel for his 13th Birthday.
This will be his first detector.
Here is Also a pick of samuel last fall finding his first silver coin with my detector.

The Ace and the XTerra are excellent starters, however since you have listed the White's CoinMasterPro, I would choose that one. It's easy enough to learn, but advanced enough to grow with, and it's excellent on coins and relics. The Ace works ok, but it I can imagine that it is a clad magnet, good for parks, and tot-lots, but it has a very annoying bell sound when it hits a target. The XTerra is a very decent machine, but I dont know too much detail about them other than alot of people own them.

Still as I said before the White's CoinMaster or any of the Prizm series for that matter. :icon_thumleft:

I honestly feel the Xterra 305 is you best bet. We teach kids metal detecting and have all 3 models for them to use. Firstly, they run to the 305, just because they like the way they look. Our counselors who teach them have noticed they seem to be more user friendly, and find a ton of stuff!

good luck!

I just got an Ace 250 for x-mas. My first tector so take the info for what it's worth.
The bell tone is as bad as advertised.
It might just be me, but I have trouble pin pointing as well. Some targets are dead on, others mysteriously "move".
All-in-all, I like it......but.

might i recommend a delta 4000 by teknetics? cost is only $279 ( kellyco * stock option #2 which has a carry bag and pin pointer included along weth some other cheap "freebies")-- which will allow some money left over it to be fitted out with a 5 inch small coil ($142) for about $ 421 bucks in total

the mine lab 305 with the stock coil is about $400 -so for about the same price $421 you get a get the delta 4000 stock coil set up plus a highly useful 5 in double d coil to boot.

the 4000 is light in wieght , simple to use and understand and is a 0 to 100 "numbers" display type of machine --thus the 100 numbers spread allows for better Iding than the ace 250's "block" system

i have owned and used a ace 250 in the past ( its "block" system of Iding tends to lump good and bad items in the same blocks making Iding a bit of a bear - which mean wasted time digging junk --not fun for a kid ) -- the 250 is not a bad starter machine but most folks out grow it quickly and the tones on it drive a lot of folks nuts --many hate the tones --(frankly they are a bit annoying' sounds like a ice cream truck bells )

I had an etrac. I found that the V-3i just seems to pound the depth deeper. The V3i is the Gold Standard for all metal detectors! If your willing to take the time to master it.

You're joking...right?? :laughing9:

305 would be my choice, basically because it was my first detector. For a 13 yr old it's light and pretty much a turn on and go machine that's easy to set up and read. Mine found me coins and things at depths upto 12" or more.

You can't go wrong with White's or Minelab. You know your son better than we do and if you know each of the machines I think it would be best as to which you think your son would like the best. Both are great machines.
