Ther'll be plenty time for countin when the dealins done.........

Called my brother Awhitster and told him about the box I just got. In to the first 10-15 rolls, roll after roll was fresh from the mint 1995 "D's"........Some bicents and other mixed dates here and there but a ton of the 95's. I then started with the rest of the box. About half way through the box I finally hit the silver. A 67 40% with red nail polish all over it. WHY??? Hit another 40 then another then the BIG ONE. Found a 64 90%er. COOL!!!
Finished the box with 6 40%ers and 1 90%. I feel good....heeheh.

Painted coins are sometimes from old jukeboxes. The proprietor would mark his coins so they could be separated out from the "profits". I always heard this as a story, but later talked to two guys who owned bars in the 50's and 60's and they said they did indeed paint coins that they kept to get the jukebox playing on a slow night. Since they did not own the jukebox, and it was emptied by the guy who owned it, it was the only way they got their money back. I'm sure coins have been painted for other reasons too, but I was glad to hear this story was true. Nice finds!

Funny how a lot of us have heard that story. There is a web site called Urban Ledgens. Maybe it's on there and we have all been skunked....eheheh

Yes, the story is true. I know they used to paint quarters at some of the bars I would visit. They were used in the juke boxes and also in the pool tables. If all of the balls didn't come out to begin a new game of pool, the customer would tell the bartender and the bartender would give them painted quarters. That way they could keep track of the profits and where they came from.

Although I do not doubt that small bars used to keep some coins around for such a reason I don’t think that can explain all of the painted coins out there. If that were the case all of the painted coins would be quarters, but I have received all denominations of painted coins. Also all the painted coins that I have received over the years have been red, the same shade of red and it doesn’t look like someone put a quick coat of nail polish on them either, this is something different. Maybe dye from a dye pack? I have always wondered.

No dye packs. I know bank robbers are stupid (who wants the FBI on their tail from the word GO?), but no robber in their right mind would rob a bank and say "GIMME ALL YOUR CHANGE!".

As for the painted coins, just how many bars or other places where jukeboxes and pool tables exist are there? 10? 20? Seems to me it is perfectly normal that we would find flocks of red coins like that. And how long have they been in business? 6 months? 2 years? lol.

At least it answers the question for me. I have gotten a few red halves in the past year, and wondered "WTF?" myuself.
:)
